Solid Beginnings : :

RJR Fabrics recently invited me to join in a blog hop to celebrate their solids collection, RJR Cotton Supreme Solids. I had a lot of fun looking through the color card and deciding what to choose for my project. There's so many color options, you can find many of them available here at Pink Castle Fabrics!

Usually I receive or purchase fabrics and then decide what they should become once the arrive, when I can see them up close, feel them, play around with grouping certain prints together, and separating their color values. With solid fabrics it's much different. Designing a project using only solids is something I haven't tried until now, although I've always wanted to!

I began by simply choosing a stack of colors that I've been feeling lately. Optical White, a bright crisp neutral. One the Rock, a light stone-y gray. Flamingo, a medium peachy pink. Tropicana, a radiant coral. Slate, a muted dark blue. And Navy, an inky ultra-dark shade. By beginning with colors that I really love, it eases any worry I feel over not having a project plan, like I'm guaranteed to make something pretty if the fabrics are beautiful!

I stitched up just one block in the time I had to begin yesterday and still haven't committed to a solid plan.

Since this solid only project is a first for me, I thought it might be fun to make something new and different than a quilt. Maybe. An extra-large quilted floor pillow, a new Summer tote bag, a modern table runner, or even a baby quilt are a few of the possibilities I've been imagining. Any suggestions?

A Quilt Top Finish : :

Well, I finished my Quilt As You Go quilt top yesterday! It took hours for me to finish it up and was just what I needed to spend yesterday doing. Listening to nothing but the hum of my machine as I added all my simple, straight-line quilting stitches gave me that same sense of comfort and calmness that I had only ever found through knitting before. It was, well...nice. And has me feeling this morning like this may just be the year of the quilt for me, although I'm pretty certain I declared that last year? I guess we'll see!

I added a large quilted border of Bari J.'s LillyBelle print, Garden Rocket in Turquoise. I had stashed 4 yds of it, and now all I have left are a few tiny scraps and just one fat quarter!

Adding all that LillyBelle added such a softness to this quilt and took the sweet, feminine vibe of my improv blocks off the charts! I think my husband's reaction was, "Wow, that's really girly!" My response was, "Yup, and it's just for me...I think?" assuring him that it wouldn't be living on our bed!

Although this morning as I looked back through the photo album I have for this quilt, I noticed that Lily sure seems to like it, too!

Eww, she actually looks mean in that last photo, yikes! Good thing I don't mind sharing.

Well, I've decided to try out some 505 Spray Adhesive for the first time for quilt basting. Reading over Ashley's of Film In The Fridge Tutorial convinced me that this is worth a try. It should be here any day and in the meantime I just need to decide on a backing -- ~~this Folsky Flannel or this Indie print? I have lots of both and I'll need it! This finished quilt top measures 68" x 72"! So, what do you think?~~ I actually changed my mind and will be finishing it in this LillyBelle print! But more importantly....

Have you tried 505? Any tips or reviews you could share here would be oh, so helpful!!

Some Happy Sewing : :

Yesterday was possibly the worst sewing day I have ever had to date. Nothing was going my way, and it only got worse as the day went on! I kept having to step away and when I would return, the silly mistakes and frustration would just continue. Blah! So, let's forget about that for now and focus on some happy sewing news, k?

I finished two more Simple Color Tote baskets for my rainbow of fabric scraps. These make me happy!!

I was so excited to receive so many comments when I first shared these, thank you! Fun and practical sewing is my absolute favorite, so these are nothing but a pleasure to make! If today's sewing road is just as bumpy, I plan to just stop and make more of these!

They are hanging and waiting to be filled, but I'm saving the fabric scrap sorting for the kids! Hopefully I convince at least one of them that it will be a fun game...he he

This new aqua tote is my very favorite! A little aqua over-load perhaps, with my chair and that door as a backdrop?!

And, this just happens to be the mug I'm drinking my coffee in today. Clearly I enjoy this color! This mug and the rest of the set, inspired my last Blogger Bundle for Pink Castle Fabrics, Sweet Summer Dreams. Today, Brenda listed my newest selection of fabrics - my "For the Boys Blogger Bundle". This new bundle is inspired by the room I hope to create for my boys in our new house, with colors that I also know my husband likes. With all the "girly sewing" I do and see, I thought it would be a nice change to put together a collection of fabrics the boys in my life would appreciate. I hope to use it to create something for them....for once!

In other news, I have a Three Little Birds pillow project in the newest issue of Simply Handmade Magazine's Sewing issue for Fall 2012. This is one of my all time favorite pillow designs!

I still remember the day I received my Summerlove bundle. It is such a gorgeous collection! I wanted to use it right away, but only a little because I loved it so much! This pillow is the design that emerged. I've made six of them now, and just listed this one in my shop!
