Friendship Braids QAYG : :

Love Story and Indie Folk Friendship Braid QAYG

For my Flower Child Quilt Market booth I made four pillow samples, one including a new quick quilt as you go pattern inspired by friendship braids.  Immediately after finishing my Flower Child pillow I knew I wanted to make an entire quilt using this pattern, combining prints from my new Love Story collection with Pat Bravo's newest, Indie Folk!

Love Story Strike Offs

Indie Folk

This is such a beautiful block with these pretty saturated prints, and it’s so fast! This block is assembled in very much the same way that you would construct a qayg log cabin pattern, but for this one I sewed the fabric strips working my way from the top to the bottom of each rectangle cut of batting which gives the illusion of woven strips, just like a braid!

To make this quilt top I used all twenty Indie Folk quilting cotton and several Love Story prints cut into strips measuring 3" x WOF. Once each rectangle cut of batting was covered with fabric edge to edge, I trimmed away the access fabric and added the trimmed block to my pile. I spent all of yesterday morning and afternoon stitching up blocks and this morning I had enough to piece together this new friendship braid qayg quilt top to photograph and share today!

Isn't she pretty? There's no way I'm done with this new quick quilt as you go just yet! I'm waiting on a new can of basting spray to arrive so I can back and bind this one to add to my shop, and I'm tempted to begin another right away with a little twist, using just Love Story this time! This will be such a great quilt pattern for using up those scraps, too!

Let me know what you think of this new qayg pattern, and if you have any questions feel free to ask in the comments! Happy sewing!

xx Maureen

  1. How big were your batting rectangles?

    1. I used up all of the large batting scraps I had, but everything was trimmed to 7.5" x 14" before I pieced them all together and I used closer to a 1/2" seam allowance when I sewed the blocks together.

  2. I have been hoarding (saving) my Fleet and Flourish fabrics and this will be the perfect quilt for them. Thank you!!

  3. I'm confused. I don't see any quilting, but you are describing this as a quilt as you go. Am I missing something? It's beautiful, by the way. :)

    1. Hi Janice! For the style of qayg that I use and teach in my Craftsy class Quick Quilt As You Go, I use cotton batting as my foundation. Each time I add a strip or piece of fabric, I'm sewing through the quilting cotton and through the batting itself, creating patchwork and quilting it to the batting all in one step, with the quilting lines showing on the reverse side of the cotton batting. I then add my backing using minimal additional quilting. You can see an example here -- http://www.maureencracknellhandmade.blogspot.com/2013/09/a-herringbone-quilt-tutorial.html

  4. How did you get the herringbone pattern? I'm not familiar with quilt-as-you-go or sewing to the batting, so maybe that's the issue? Is there a way to get a pattern for this, or photos of how you pieced the blocks?

This friendship braid qayg pattern is something I just started experimenting with, but I use this method of qayg for most of what I make these days, so please let me know if you have any additional questions!

  7. I rather like it - a great way to use scrappy fabrics from your stash - and being smaller blocks you can turn the rectangles in all directions. Lots of great options to play with. The fabrics are cute too, especially those little birdies at the top. A fun quilt to do, thank you for showing us.

  10. Maureen, the fabrics and qayg pattern are just so beautiful. I have your Craftsy class and loooove it!!! I'm not sure if I have missed something but will it be possible to purchase the pattern for this quilt in the near future? A belated thank you for posting pictures of your lovely new studio. Sending you best wishes and blessings from Dublin, Ireland.
