A Pretty Pillow & Stash : :

pretty lillybelle bow pillow

Are those fabrics distracting?? Don't worry...there's lots more below, but first I want to share my newest pillow!!

On a rainy day a couple weeks ago, I started thinking ahead to the holidays, with an idea for a new pillow design, and the need to make something bright and warm and pretty! I reached for my favorite LillyBelle print, Garden Rocket in Ruby, and my favorite shade of yellow, with a little pop of hot pink, and got to work!

LillyBelle Bow Pillow

I finished it with a Modernology print, Mod Vines in Raspberry, and I just love this beautiful jewel-tone pink. Overall, I think and hope my pillow came out bright & warm and pretty & cheery! I've added it to my etsy and am crossing my fingers that it will find a home soon!

NOW LETS TALK FABRIC!!

Pretty Bow Pillow

Today, I finally plan to separate and photograph all that I've stashed these last several weeks! For the record, this is way more than I usually buy in months and months....and months!! With my dream of sewing full-time beginning and so many amazing collections due out ALL at the exact same time, what's up with that?? I just felt like I had no choice!! It was a business investment, right?!

Woah!!! So much goodness!

I know you've been stashing or saving for that new fabric collection(s), too -- please do share!! I'd love to know what your current favorite is??

I noticed just after the holidays that my fabric stash is seriously lacking two things -- purple and solids. Since then, I've been keeping my eye out for pretty purples (and solids). I just stashed these Art Gallery fabrics from Moona Fabrics and they have me wanting more!

Art Gallery -- LOVE!

Don't they look so pretty in the sunlight? It definitely makes me think of Spring!

Art Gallery -- LOVE!

Slowly I hope to add many of the purples below to my stash -- they're all Art Gallery Fabrics by Patricia Bravo, and they are all so gorgeous!

My creation

How about some more Purple & in the form of a music video? What? Yup! Check it out, Art Gallery Fabrics put together the cutest little video to showcase their new Poetica line. I love it!

Cute! Right? I'm sold and very excited to be offering the Purple & Blue colorway of Poetica right here in a new giveaway beginning Friday! Be sure to stop back!!

How about you? What color(s) are you loving these days?

Happy Wednesday, friends!!

Tuesday Inspiration : :

Purple + Green + Yellow + Blue

Purple + Green + Yellow + Blue
Photos via Pinterest

I really never buy purple anything for myself (for my daughter yes), but me? Nope, never. So I really surprised myself last week when I saw this lightweight, cream fabric with shades of purples, yellow, greens and blue at the fabric shop and had to bring it home. After I pulled some coordinating quilting weight cottons from my stash, right away I started sewing.

Purple + Green + Yellow + Blue

Using this palette and my new Simple Scarf Tutorial from last week, with just a few measurement adjustments, I made myself a new Fall scarf.

Patchwork Scarf

It's not very heavy and I like that. I'm not ready to layer on the wool until after the leaves have fallen. And, this way I can reach for it in the Spring again. The front is just an improv patchwork piecing of some of my favorite fabrics in these colors. I kept the width of the front 9" and kept piecing until the scarf length measured about 73". The back is made up of two pieces of the lightweight fabric sewn together to measure 9" x 73". I sewed the front and back pieces together right sides facing each other using a 1/2" seam allowance all the way around, turned it out, pressed and stitched all the way around again -- when finished this scarf measures 8" x 72".

It's not something I'll wear everyday. But making scarfs whether by knitting or sewing is just
so easy, quick, and satisfying it's just nice to do every once in a while, wouldn't you agree?

Patchwork Scarf

I'll be entering this scarf in the Wearables category of Celebrate Color. Which makes me giggle because I know that I am not a very good garment sewist. Regardless, it's fun just to join in! You should too!!!

How about you? What color combinations are you loving these days?

Quilted Stripes Pillow Tutorial : :

Purple, Grey, and Yellow Strip Pillow

Today I'm going to share a tutorial with you for a simple pillow cover -- My Favorite Colors Stripey Toss Pillow. A project designed to showoff your favorite color combinations that's quick, easy, and turns out super cute! It's a great project for a beginner quilter, if you want a project to practice sewing those perfect straight lines with your machine, and also great if you need to get a little hand quilting practice in.

What you'll need : :
  • 1 - Pillow Insert measuring 12" x 16"
  • 8 - 2.5" x 12.5" strips of quilting weight cotton fabric in your favorite color combination
  • 2 - 9" x 12.5" pieces of fabric for the back of the pillow
  • 1 - piece of cotton batting measuring 14" x 18"
  • 1 - piece of cotton muslin measuring 14" x 18"
  • Threads and Pearl Cotton floss in coordinating colors
  • Sharp scissors and an embroidery needle
  • Embroidery Hoop or Quilting Hoop
  • Note * Click on any of my images for a larger picture

Cutting and Piecing the Fabrics : :

1. Choose eight different fabrics with a color scheme of your choice (you can find my inspiration for the Purple, Yellow, and Grey color scheme of my pillow here) 2. Cut the fabrics into eight 2.5" x 12.5" pieces (I recommend using a rotary cutter and mat set for cutting)
purple + yellow + greyFabric Color strips

3. Leaving a 1/4" seam allowance, sew the fabric strips together. Sewn together, each color will measure 2", the entire piece 16.5" 4. On the reverse side, press all seams open. Once finished, give the front side a good press, as well

After these Cutting and Piecing steps, the pillow top should look like this : :
sewn together, seams pressed open -- front
Layering and Quilting the Pillow Top : :

5. Cut Muslin and Batting to measure 14" x 18" -- Cutting these pieces larger will help when quilting. At a later point the excess will be trimmed away 6. Layer Muslin, Batting, and Pieced Pillow Top
Muslin and BattingLayers -- Muslin, Batting, Pillow Top

7. Prepare for machine quilting. Pin layers together well, adding a few pins running down each of the eight different fabrics that makeup your pillow top 8. Stitch on either side of the seams as shown in the photo below (I used a pale purple and deep purple thread to match my color choices) 9. Once quilted, remove pins

After these Quilting steps, the pillow top should look like this : :

10. Using a large ruler or straight edge, trim away excess fabric, batting, and muslin. The pillow top should now measure 12.5" x 16.5"

Adding the Hand Quilted Detail : :

11. Carefully put the quilted pillow top inside the embroidery/quilting hoop, stretching it taught, but not too tight. 12. Cut a length of floss, thread strand onto embroidery needle, knotting one end
Add some StitchingHoop and Floss

13. For a running Stitch : : Insert needle up through the bottom, pull the stitch through until the knot catches, insert down through the front and pull back through. Repeat leaving a little space between each stitch, like shown in the photo below. Try to keep those stitches even.
Running StitchRunning Stitch

After these Hand Quilting steps, the pillow top should look like this : : Pillow Top Finished
Sew pillow together : :

14. Prepare back pieces -- Using the 9" x 12.5" fabric pieces, fold over one of the sides measuring 12.5" just a 1/4", press, fold over again, press. Sew along inner folded edge and along the outer edge, staying close to the fold. This will create the double seam finish. 15. Place pillow top piece RIGHT side up on your work surface. Place both backing pieces RIGHT side down on top of the pillow top piece. Pin and sew along entire perimeter using a 1/4" seam allowance. 16. Zig zag stitch around the entire perimeter, as well

17. Trim all four corners

18. Turn pillow right side out (You can see here that I added my striped fabric running in different directions just for something different). Press well
