For Kaiden : :

Kaiden's Pile

This past Sunday morning I finished up my Making Rows Quilt top, a quilt-as-you-go style quilt I'm making to give Kaiden on Christmas. I had mentioned when I shared my Diamond Strings Quilt that Kaiden had such grand ideas for his design that it could take just as long to make, as it's taken me to make the eight I've already finished. That, combined with him changing his mind sort of often, was making me a little nervous as to whether I could reach my goal of making my three kiddos and each of my brother's & sister's children a quilt of their very own to handout at Christmas time.

With so much on my plate besides this quilt goal of mine, I decided to just go for it and I started a quilt for Kaiden using fabrics I knew he'd like, in a color-scheme I knew he'd love. I showed him some peeks along the way and I'm happy to report he's thrilled with it! I felt especially proud after noticing how very similar the quilt I made for him is to the items he chose for himself when we recently went Winter clothes shopping. Yay, victory!

For Winter

I quilted each row using my go-to quilt-as-you-go method, with mostly straight line quilting, adding in just a few decorative stitches here and there!

I chose a 100% cotton, plaid flannel shirting for the quilt back that is soooo perfect!

I'm basting this one today and I'll be back tomorrow with a Sunset Quilt finish to share! I glanced over those quilt photos just now as I was putting these together, and I'm so excited! Be sure to stop back!!

  1. This is really cute! How old is your son? I have a 12 year old grandson and it can be a challenge to make him things now that he has gotten older and like what he likes!

    1. In just 4 weeks, he'll be eleven, I can't believe it! It's a little tough for me too, mostly because the boys are both at ages where they don't like "little boy" stuff at all anymore, compared to Haila who is almost 7 and still loves cute things and is not picky at all. Coming up with little girl ideas is just so easy!

  3. Your quilt is a handsome one. Love the straight line quilting - AND those fabrics are awesome! Great job, Maureen! I can easily picture how excited your son must be! I just finished my son's first quilt made by me this week, but I can't post about it until November 12th.

  4. Maureen, I love what you have done here. I'm looking for a back for the quilt I'm working on in very very similar colors. What is "shirting flannel"?

  6. GREAT quilt. This one will carry him on into adult hood. Good job! I've started choosing fabric & pattern for my oldest (15 yo boy) and it has been a challenge during the throws of teen angst. I think we've FINALLY settled - I'm using thrifted men's shirts (for that silky feeling cotton) cut to include a few pockets and button plackets (for fun) in rectangles to be placed in a subway tile pattern. colors: blues, greens, grays with just a couple of oranges for a pop of color.

    1. I pinned this a few weeks back and was so inspired! I would love to make something like this one day, using all of my boys baby dress shirts I've kept. I used to dress them in button down shirts like little men all the time! :) http://www.pinterest.com/pin/179088522655415658/

    1. Jo~Ann Fabrics. It's my second time backing a quilt with it and it gets even softer after it's washed. I'm a fan!

  10. Gorgeous! Great idea to use flannel shirting for a backing, that hadn't occurred to me. Our son is eight, and his favorite color is golden yellow. I have a stack of yellow and gray fabrics, that he helped me select, to make into a quilt for him. He has outgrown the "stars and guitars" quilt I made when he was two, although yellow was a featured color even then. I don't think I can make a Christmas deadline, but his birthday falls in February, so that's my goal.

Thanks, Maureen, for continuing to inspire us!
