A Skull Quilt Top : :

I am so very excited to share this new quilt top with all of you today!

in the breeze

First, let's talk fabric!! I had so much fun making this! It's made out of some of my favorite prints from both colorways of Pat Bravo's newest collection Rock & Romance. Another amazing collection, I have to say!

Rock & Romace Gorgeousness!!

When I first received these fabrics, I understood Pat's vision right away -- both sweet and dark, feminine and bold, girly-girl meets rocker. Perfect for that daughter, grand-daughter, sister, niece, friend -- who is too mature for anything cute, but still young and definitely fun! This collection is full of pretty florals, which Pat always does so beautifully, in many shades of grey, a little black, with pops of pinks, purples, and yellow. Each print is just gorgeous!!

Next up, the design! Well, what would be more perfect to explain Pat's vision for this collection than a skull quilt?! Oh yeah!

I am so honored to have been asked again to help tell her story for these fabrics through quilt making, just as I did with Indie.

Designing this quilt was such a treat for me. The skull pattern is a little taste specific, but I think it works so well with these fabrics, but the design is versatile enough that it would make a very cool boy quilt for a pretty wide range of ages, as well as the perfect Halloween quilt. Don't you think?

Soon, I plan to offer both this new pattern, and my Indie quilt pattern, here to all of you. I can't wait!!

And now, in case you are wondering where this crazy backdrop of a house is located? The answer is.. right in our little town, smack in the middle of Main St. While making this quilt, I just couldn't get the idea of these pictures out of my head. It just seemed like the most perfect place to go for this particular quilt, it had to happen.

So, last evening Kevin and I did a little innocent trespassing all for the love of Rock & Romance quilt top picture taking. And, it was SO worth it!!

They may look a little spooky, especially in black & white! Yikes!!

But we thought the end result was pretty special! I've seen photos of this "Old Hickory" house used in ads for horror movies shared on facebook, I found a popular photo on flickr from 2006, and even some on Pinterest. I'm glad to have finally found a reason to share it myself!

I do hope to turn this quilt into a pattern, but the truth is, the idea creating a quilt pattern scares me way more than this house? But that's a fear I really need to conquer! I have so many ideas for new quilts....and I'm really hoping you'll be interested in sewing them?!

    2. I saw a hot air ballon too, until I made the connection! It would be cute to scale the pattern down & put several 'ballons' in different colors on a top.

That's a great old house. Hope your town has plans to keep it alive.

  11. I've been in love with this fabric ever since I saw a first glimpse of it. That skull design is just perfect for it. And I think the fabric is just sweet enough to tone down the image without making it super cutesy.

I feel so sad for that house, though. Hopefully someone comes and rescues it soon and brings it back to the glorious home it obviously was at some point.

  27. I love the quilt! While I don't like skulls myself, I really do like the fabrics! Your comment "both sweet and dark, feminine and bold, girly-girl meets rocker. Perfect for that daughter, grand-daughter, sister, niece, friend -- who is too mature for a anything cute, but still young and definitely fun!" that's my daughter exactly!! We are looking for fabric to go in her (and her sister's) room and I do believe this is it! Thank you!

On a side note, this same daughter is really interested in drawing. I know nothing next about tools/items to get for her. What do you suggest for a beginner? You can e-mail me if you would prefer: ajdewing(at)gmail(dot)com
    Thank you!

  31. Love the house, love the quilt!! And if you don't put the darks in the eyes and nose areas, it would be a great hot air balloon: just saying, in case there are those who don't go for the skull motif!! :-)

  32. Wow what a stunning quilt! I actually thought it was a hot air balloon before you mentioned it was a skull. Such a great backdrop the house looks like the perfect location for taking pictures of quilts spooky or not =D

  42. That is SOOOOO cool!! The quilt, the house, the photos--everything! I'm not normally a skull person but the fabrics that you used and the way you described it make it a must-do for my 18 yr old daughter. We both love murder mysteries, scary movies, spooky stuff--this would be so great for her! I hope you'll do the pattern soon. LOVE the house, too. Wow, what history that house must have. I'm already thinking of where I'll have my photo shoot when I'm done my quilt. ;D

    ReplyDelete
  43. Hahaha, SO COOL! I love that you've made a scull! And you've put the fabrics together amazingly. Ah, you're so great Maureen!

    ReplyDelete
  44. I love this one. I don't like all the "trendy" skull items, but I really LOVE this. I showed it to my daughters and they both loved it too. My 8 year old said that house was beautiful, she didn't see anything spooky about it.

    ReplyDelete
  45. The house is the perfect backdrop for that very cool quilt. Great job Maureen!

    ReplyDelete
  46. Heh, I thought that was a skull when I first saw it, but wasn't sure til you confirmed it (although my only other thought was a very odd hot air balloon ;o) ) Perfect backdrop too!

    ReplyDelete
  47. Ok, I have to admit I don't love the skull but I admire your creativity! I think it would be even better if it were skull and crossbones (I have a boy who looooves pirates of course!).... not sure if that's do-able or not- and totally different vibe. Anyway- I'm sure I've seen that house in passing on a road trip to the US- we stopped the car and just gawked for a while. If only we had millions to scoop it up and fix it up!!

  48. I'm remembering... most amaaaaazing diner/bakery in town?? We stopped for lunch... doughnuts? Am I crazy?

  54. I was reading your Butterfly Quilt Finishing blog this morning and just happened to click on the link that brought me to this page! I love these fabrics. I don't see the skull though in the pattern, it looks "hot air balloon" to me.

I want to "rescue" that house! I live in one that is 110 years old, and we spent our life savings to save it. It is no wonder the one in your town sits derelict. We have many lovely old homes in town, and most have been saved, but they do take deep pockets. Waiting to win the lotto for my next "big project" at home! :)

  55. I love this quilt - have you made it into a pattern as there is someone I would love to make it for!!
