Summer Sewing : :

Last night, just after finishing my Field Day scrappy hourglass quilt top, I draped it over the empty curtain rod in my sewing room. The bottom was caught by the fan wind and it danced around. As I watched, the sunlight lowered just enough to beam through the very center of my quilt. The illumination transformed my scrappy patchwork into a stained glass illusion for just a few minutes. It was glorious to see! I snapped only a couple of photos, trying to avoid the mess below on my computer desk. I've decided this quilt top must come with us to our beach vacation, with hopes of getting a better shot of this quilt top all aglow in the sunlight!

In the Light

Along with it I'm bringing my Friendship Diamond Quilt to photograph and to share with you next week. As well as my sketchbook! I've been wanting to draw so much since my father passed away. I just haven't had the time. I plan to do lots of doodling, quilt sketching, and to finalize plans for my Indelible quilt, which I'm having problems deciding on. Should this piece you see below be the center of a medallion style quilt or a repeat block design. Hmn?

If you have a vote please chime in, I always appreciate your input!

Be sure to stop back tomorrow for an Indelible Giveaway and to visit me next week here, where I'll be blogging from the Outer Banks!

    1. Well, I suppose it could still be the center of my quilt with a repeat block design? I used the darkest fabrics in the Indelible collection to create this block. It definitely wants to be front and center, it's so bold!

  2. What a beautiful shot and your Indelible quilt WOW! It is so masculine looking and I'm surprised how much I love it. I can imagine it as a repeat design and I think it will be very striking, but I would really enjoy seeing you build around it as you mentioned. I think it would make a powerful center to a quilt design!

    1. Thank you! Maybe sketching out both options will be best. Then I might need to take another vote, I'm so indecisive these days! :)

  3. I'd love to see the secondary pattern emerge if you did repeat blocks. HOWEVER, I'd also be intrigued to see what other patterns you'd create using this block as the center of a medallion quilt. I'm no help, sorry! :>)

    1. My dilemma exactly! I just go back and forth repeating to myself the same as both you and the commenter above you writes. Maybe sketching out both options will be best. I might need to take another vote, I'm so indecisive these days!

  5. I like the idea of this being the center piece and exploding more creativity to each corner :)

  6. OMG!! Both of these are just stunning!!!

  7. I liked your Field Day quilt top so much that I ordered a bundle of it and a bundle of Lucky Penney last nite! The plan is to mix them together; however that's as far as the plan has gotten. Maybe by the time they get here I will have more of a plan!

  8. I am leaning towards using it as a center. But only because to me if that was a repeatig pattern it would make me dizzy. I think using it as a center would allow you to use different blocks to highlight different fabrics through each round. Either way though it would look amazing.

  9. enjoy your break and sketching! when I go on holidays I also take a sketchbook with me. It helps me to stand the fact that I am away from my sewing machine!!:) I would make this block the center of a medaillon kind of quilt: it is amazing! you are such a great source of inspiration!:)

  10. I think a medallion-style quilt would be awesome.

  11. My first thought was medallion-style. Your creativity is just endless. :)

  14. I'm really into the Navajo designs I see popping up in quilts right now so I would vote for a strip of five of these down a quilt...maybe off center and maybe you could sketch out something else wonderful to add to it or leave it simple

  15. I think the center of a more subtle design outside of it. It is already a statement by itself. Love your ideas. -Susie

  16. Woo... I wouldn't know what to do with the quilt either. I'm sure both options would be amazing.

  17. Grrr... I've typed this three times already and my computer isn't allowing it to go. Hopefully the third time is the charm! ;) I think either would work. HOWEVER, I think a large scale herringbone pattern would work perfectly with this design at the center since the eyes are immediately drawn to an outward movement. I'm not sure how you'd work that out exactly, but you're far more gifted and experienced than I am, so I'm sure you could figure it out. :) Cheers!

  18. Oh my goodness this is beautiful!!! I want to try it so bad! Did you create this pattern?! You're so dang talented! My vote would be a repeating pattern of some sort (love some of the ones mentioned above). I like the idea of it as a medallion center, but I think it would be so much more breathtaking and eyecatching as a whole pattern. It would make a GREAT pattern for a guy when used with the right fabric. I hope that comes off the way I want it to and not offensive...sometimes it's hard to find patterns that aren't too boring or tradadional or girly to make for a grown man. This would be so different and perfect for some of the guys in my life. :) Love it! Can't wait to try this!

  19. Beautiful!! I would use it as the medallion and use the diamonds in the outer border to mimic half of the medallion!

  20. I don't think you can go wrong with that block no matter what you do.

  21. Repeat block design! That is an amazing block. Can't wait to see what you do with it....

  22. This block is gorgeous and would command attention no matter what you did! But...for you to be thrilled with it means you need to draw out your options!

  25. This block is just stunning. I'd love to see it repeated, but I'm sure you would do something fabulous using it as a center medallion. Sketching it both ways could be really helpful. I agree with a previous comment that this would make a great quilt for a guy. Please do share the final result!

  26. I vote for medallion as it truly deserves to be the center of attention.
but draw it out and see what you think. sometimes you just have to try one option and go with it.
if not, do both. take one and make a medallion. take the rest and repeat. do you have enough fabric to play like that?

  27. Hi Maureen! I imagine it as part of a center column (so repeated in above and below as needed), and a "calmer" pattern on each side of it, so it becomes the central focus. Does that make sense? In other words, repeated down the center only. : )

  29. I love it as is! I'd love to see a quilt with this as the entire design!

  30. I would say center. When I first saw the picture I thought 'What a cool wall hanging' and then I found it it wasn't finished.
