Indie Symmetry Quilt : :

It's the first day back to school for my kids, I can hardly believe Summer vacation is already over! I never handle these big events well so, I'm extra grateful to have saved this new quilt to share here today rather than trying to fit blogging into our busy day yesterday. I needed something exciting to blog about!

Indie Symmetry Quilt

Having this big, beautiful Indie quilt finally finished is honestly the most excitement I've felt since I began quilting! It's almost a King size quilt, measuring in at 90"x104"! It's made in all Indie fabrics, a collection by Pat Bravo for Art Gallery Fabrics, in a simple symmetrical layout of both large & small, square & rectangle cuts of fabric. When I sketched out the pattern more than a year ago, I was inspired by a few quilts I had seen at my most favorite store, Anthropologie. These Indie fabrics go so well with that colorful, bohemian style!

It's on our bed now, along with my favorite Indie pillow, and a few more cozy layers of bedding that I've been collecting to go with this quilt throughout the year. A work in progress still, but I like how our room is starting to come together.

The quilt top was originally made about a year ago for Pat to use in her Indie promotional ads and video. Then just a few weeks ago I finally pieced together the largest quilt back I've ever seen and shipped both the top and back off to Sew Shabby Quilting, a professional long-arm machine quilting service I was recently introduced to. For this quilt, keeping with it's pattern of squares and rectangles, I chose their Square Dance .01, a perfect pattern match in my opinion! Melissa did such an amazing job!!

The back is finished in the Indie Afro Fusion in Dusk print and the binding is Dynasty in Saffron, my two most favorite fabrics in the collection!

Because of it's large size photographing this one was such a challenge, but we still managed a few fun shots! I'm so grateful for my husband and kids for being so awesome and careful when it came to taking these last photos!

I still have to finish up tutorials for a few of my other quilts, but I'm curious how many of you would be interested in making a quilt this size? And, if taking the time to share the pattern at some point would be a good idea? When it comes to making a quilt this big, I love the large piecing myself, and don't feel disappointed at all with the symmetrical look as opposed to making up a quilt this size block, by block. What do you think?

Wishing you all a wonderful week!    Maureen

  1. Personally - I love the symmetry and the bold prints. The pattern is ideal for quilters who want to use large pieces from collections they love. I am a bohemian style of woman - so this is who it will appeal to!

  2. Would love to make a quilt that big. The bold prints are great.

  3. The quilt is gorgeous -- your room looks so relaxing and refreshing! I would love a tute on that scrappy little pillow. :)

    1. Thank you! You know I had planned a tutorial for that pillow and would still love to tackle that when the time is right! It's definitely my favorite handmade pillow and even after several washings I think it still looks pretty cool!

  4. I would absolutely love a pattern for this quilt. The second I saw it I said to myself that I wanted it on my bed. Please do!

  5. Your quilt is stunning! I love the Indie fabric as well...made a quilt for my sister with it and then had to purchase more fabric for myself...I would love a pattern. The fabrics are just too gorgeous to cut up into small pieces!!

    1. I totally agree! When Pat asked me to design the quilt, once I got over how amazing that in itself was, I decided right away that these fabrics didn't need much to show them off and that a large quilt, with large piecing would be just perfect! :)

  7. I have loved this quilt since you first showed the top, it actually inspired me to buy my own little set of Indie half yards. I wouldn't be able to do one this big though, but I would love a smaller but similar pattern (so I don't have to work out one myself...lazy!)

  8. Me! I have been hoarding some of my Indie in hopes of a tutorial for this quilt! I would love the queen size tutorial so I can put it on my bed (dad and mom's house) in the mountains!

    1. I have it on our queen size bed now and I love the size for it. It is just 6" shy in length of being a king and I especially love the extra width hanging over the sides of our bed. I don't have a skirt, so it's long enough to hide all the pillow form inserts I have stored under our bed! haha

  9. This is just gorgeous! That line is one of my all-time favorites and I have a 1/2 yard bundle that I've saved to make a quilt for my bed, so yes, please share your wonderful pattern someday! Hope everyone has a good first day back to school :-)

  11. Beautiful, stunning and worth the wait. That's all I have to say about that. Was your husband hiding behind the quilt holding tightly? Hope so.

    1. My husband AND children!! I'm so impressed by them, especially since they all managed to hide behind the quilt for me to take these photos without any little heads or feet showing! :)

    1. Having Sew Shabby Quilting do the quilting with their long-arm machine quilting service was really the way to go for me. I couldn't imagine doing it myself, plus it turned out even more beautiful than I was hoping for. I'm a very happy customer!!

    1. I'm hoping to at least break down the size of fabric cuts I used, since a full tutorial won't be possible. However, I would love to have a reason to make this quilt again with a different collection that I love, it really showcases the beautiful prints that make up Indie well!

Did you quilt as you go with this one? I think that's the only way I could make this large of a quilt.

    1. Nope, for this one I had it sent out to Sew Shabby Quilting, a professional long-arm quilting service. Melissa did an amazing job! After thinking about how I would quilt it these past several months, I'm so glad I left it up to a professional. I could have never quilted it myself, especially so beautifully!!

  19. Wow, this is really pretty Maureen. The colors of the fabrics are so rich. I think you were right in choosing to have it quilted on a long arm, the pattern you choose is great. That picture of them hanging your quilt over the river with your comment just CRACKED me up. LOL As a side note, I have the same bed you have. Sooooo if you ever get tired of your quilt you can send it my way. :o)

  20. Maureen, this is simply gorgeous! I love the feel of the quilt and my favorite fabric from that line is the one you used for the back too. I bet you just love coming to your room now, it's a beautiful oasis. :)

  21. I remember when you first posted about this top, and mentioned it would be a tutorial/pattern. I've been waiting ever since!! : ) Please do put out a tute, or something similar to one. I know there's a lot of people with king sized beds out there, and this is a great pattern idea for a large quilt - large scale prints and no intricate piecing.
It really is a beautiful quilt, congrats on having it finished!

  22. I would love to do this. Your quilt is stunning. Hope we can have the tutorial soon. Thanks, Maureen.

PS, I think I want your bed, complete with coverings...

  51. Are you feeling the love Maureen, lol?

I'm not sure that I would ever use a king pattern but I would love it in a queen & add my vote to a tutorial on that fun pillow. I'd love more pillow tutorials but then you already know that if you remember who I am:)

  54. Your Indie quilt is stunningly beautiful, I LOVE this one! Well done & great photos too, though I would have been terrified with the over the water shot - it is a spectacular shot though.

    ReplyDelete
  55. I love it. It is just gorgeous. I love the large pieces too. I tend to make bigger quilts versus smaller ones so one this size wouldn't scare me at all.

    ReplyDelete
  56. LOVE that quilt!! It's so pretty. I love the way you've decorated your bedroom, too. I'd love to be uber nosey and have a look around your house, so should you ever choose to do a 'here's how I've decorated the new house' post, I'll be here with my coffee-laden bated breath. :D

In my past quilting life, I tended to do a lot of smaller quilts, barely lap sized. Now that my kids are no longer in the toddler stage and in the love-to-lounge-on-the-sofa-and-watch-TV-stage, I love to make larger quilts for snuggling under. I'd love the tutorial!

  57. This quilt is gorgeous! You have a great eye for color and placement. Love the pic of your family placing the quilt on the bridge. I would have had mine hiding behind the quilt holding on to it just in case the wind came up! I'd probably piece something this big (have before) but like you I wouldn't quilt it myself.

  58. I just found your blog and I love all that you have done. Your quilts are beautiful and inspiring. I am an avid knitter, but beginner quilter, and your blog makes me want to learn more (and have time for more...but with a 4 and 2 year old sometimes that doesn't happen). Thanks for brightening my day!

  59. What a wonderful quilt! And quite a daring photo, out over the water.

I'm finishing up an 88x96 quilt on my domestic machine. If I do another one this size, I'll be sending it to a longarmer.

  60. Very pretty. I would love to put together something like this but don't have the knack for picking the fabric. You certainly do though!!
