When I've had a little time, I have been busy working on this new embroidery. I began work on it
last week, with the plan to make
something special to be a gift for my sister who lives in Hawaii. The basic design is just a stylized take on the
tropical Naupaka flower, with added embroidery embellishments to work with
the fabric I am using for the other side of the pillow --- a bit of my
good folks stash, which so perfectly is the
fortune print in "Sea" --- perfect for my sea lovin' sister.
For the rest of the design I am just having a little fun with some new stitches. My current favorite is the "laced back stitch" that I happened to find when thumbing through the back of
Alicia Paulson's book
Stitched in Time.
To create this stitch - you make a line of back stitches and then take a contrasting thread, bring it up through the fabric at the top of the back stitch and weave it from side to side under each back stitch until the end. I used a blunt-ended needle for the weaving. When finished it resembles more of a braid look to me and I just love it --- the way it looks, the contrasting threads intertwined, and the touch of it.
I have quite a ways to go before I am finished, I am still not quite sure how I want it to look, but I wanted to share what I am working on. Making these hand embroidered pillows is such a sweet and gratifying way to make a special, personalized gift for all those special people. --- more on that
