Pure Solids Granny Square Pillows!

IMG_8516

Earlier this Summer Art Gallery Fabrics came out with a vibrant assortment of gorgeous new Pure Solids including twenty new colors and I was so excited to get them in my hands to make something for their Pure Solids Fabric LookBook. Take a look at this gorgeous stack!

IMG_8488

From these twenty new colors I chose nine to make a set of Granny Square pillows using the quilt block tutorial found in AGF's Quilt Block Collection and I really enjoyed making this block! I can't remember having made this one before, add to that I'm a fabric designer and therefore work with lots and lots of prints, so this project felt like a fun departure for me. Although next time I make this block I'll most likely use some of my own fabrics, I certainly love how the Granny Square looks in all solids. The colors really pop!

IMG_8493

To make one or a colorful set of pillows just like mine, all you need to do is follow the Granny Square Block PDF and add an 1.5" border to all four sides to make a 15" square pillow top once quilted and then squared up. I finished mine with an envelope style back, then added binding just as I do to my quilts and stuffed it with a 16" insert to keep it nice and full. Pulling the yellow from the center to add the border and using the same Ruby red in my block as the binding really tied the whole thing together, don't you think?!

IMG_8500

I kept with the same pattern for the blue version, using the Lemon Tart yellow again and pulling the bright Cozumel Blue for my binding. Sticking with the same pattern is really what makes these two pillows such a nice pair!

IMG_8494

And now you'll have to let me know which one is your favorite!

A Summer Bag for Sharon Holland's Everlasting Blog Tour!

Today I'm excited to share my project for my talented friend, Sharon Holland's Everlasting Blog Tour!

IMG_9172

Everlasting Blog Tour

Sharon is a dear friend, who I've mentioned quite a bit here on the blog as we've co-hosted a few different events together, and she's also a fellow Art Gallery Fabrics designer. Everlasting is her seventh fabric collection, full of romantic, summer-inspired prints with a classic palette of navy, red, turquoise, and blush. It's so pretty!

Everlasting by Sharon Holland rolls

I had the pleasure of sewing up a few different samples for the Everlasting LookBook back in May and for this blog tour project I chose several of my favorite Everlasting prints to make a variation of this Summer Bag using my go-to Quick Quilt As You Go and I love how it turned out!

IMG_9153

Following the Summer Bag pattern, I used the same size blocks that are suggested only I had I to use different size pieces of Everlasting fabrics since I was working with what I had left from making the LookBook projects. Using qayg, I densely stitched each fabric to a cushiony layer of Hobbs Tuscany cotton batting with a pretty turquoise Aurifil 50wt, assembled the bag according to the instructions with just slightly wider bag straps, and then I finished with a lining made in my pretty Sun Kissed Canvas!

IMG_9156

This pattern makes a HUGE tote-style bag that is perfect for Summer outings! The extra quilting, layer of batting, and canvas lining make this a sturdy bag while keeping it still very soft. I just LOVE how good Sharon's Everlasting fabrics are for quilt as you go patchwork!

I hope you're inspired by my stop on Sharon's Everlasting Tour! It's such an honor to be amongst this amazing line up of designers:

A Soulmate Blooms Table Runner : :

Hi friends! I can't believe last week flew by without a single blog post from me. Beginning on New Years Eve we've been taking turns having the flu in our home, and so the first three weeks of January are a bit of a blur for me. Last week was the first that I was able to make it to my studio for several consecutive days. I spent my time organizing, sewing and working on a new Love Story display. It was so nice! Once my Love Story LookBook was finished, AGF sent the samples I had made from strike offs and my advanced yardage. Since Love Story is one of the collections that I didn't show at International Quilt Market, I thought it would be fun to create a little "booth" display on my own, now that I have the space. I'll be sharing how it's coming together very soon, but first today I want to share one of the last projects I made for the LookBook -- my Soulmate Blooms table runner!

Love Story Table Runner

Because I LOVE patchwork, it's instinctual for me to create nearly everything I make using a mixture of prints and colors. But, more and more I've been admiring and sharing on my Instagram the things made with my fabrics that are more simple, showcasing just one or two prints. For this table runner I pulled two of the Love Story prints that I'd most like to see on our dining room table, allowing the pale peachy-pink Soulmate Blooms print to be the star, and I love how it turned out!

Love Story Fabric

Love Story Soulmate Blooms Table Runner

Table runners like this one, that are simple, quick and that can be made in any size, are so rewarding to make! I simply cut a piece of cotton batting measuring about 14" x 40" and spray basted that to my backing fabric. I use my Quick Quilt As You Go method for just about everything these days, including this project. I cut a piece of my Soulmate Bloom measuring 9" 30", centered and spray basted the fabric to my cotton batting and quilted it from top to bottom with narrow, long stitches using a pretty coral Aurifil 50 wt.

Love Story Runner

Next I framed the quilted Soulmate Blooms with AGF's denim in my new favorite Afternoon Sail colorway, added a border of Love Story Daring Tribal Sunset and finished with Darling Echoes Vert binding, a pretty green to make those florals pop!

This runner is so pretty for February decorating, a perfect setting for a beautiful bouquet of Valentine's Day flowers!

Love Story Sewing : :

When I sat down to sew Wednesday morning, after the kids were all off to school, I was a little bit overwhelmed by everything I had been waiting to make now that I finally had the time. Where should I start? There is just so much to do! Other than stitching up my weekly Sewcial Bee Sampler blocks, preparing my Soulful booth for this past Spring Quilt Market and filling the Etsy order that come through each day, I haven't been sewing much these past several weeks. I've been dealing with severe and relentless autoimmune issues for months now and I've been so centered on designing, which is exactly where my focus needed to be when I was blessed with a little time to work during our busy Summer days. But now I have time, hours to create without interruption and I'm overcome with possibilities. And so, I decided to start with the most exciting task at hand -- Love Story sewing!

Love Story pompoms

I won't be showing Love Story at Fall Quilt Market, I have a brand new collection due out in March to debut (hooray!) but I still need to make as many strike off samples as I can for the November LookBook. It's so exciting to sew with these little pieces of fabric! It's both exhilarating and hugely rewarding. Holding months of hard work in your hands feels like another dream fulfilled. I eased into my checklist, beginning with a couple of drawstring bags inspired by this tutorial by Svetlana of s.o.t.a.k. handmade. One with red pompoms from the Target dollar section and one in my favorite herringbone qayg. I love them both!

Love Story Drawstring Bag

Love Story Herringbone Drawstring Bag

Whenever a new collection arrives I like the prints themselves to influence so much of what I decide to make, and my Flower Stamp print inspired me straight away!

Flower Stamp

Love Story Inspired

Simple raw edge applique with navy Aurifil thread from my Bohemian Garden thread set worked perfectly for recreating my flower design. To pair with this Flower Stamped Applique pillow I made a second with a first attempt at a pineapple quilt block inspired QAYG. I love how this pillow duo turned out, especially with this pretty blue AGF denim!

Love Story Patchwork

Love Story Pillow

I hope these project have you excited to sew with Love Story!! I am counting down the days and will have many more Love Story projects to share in the days and weeks ahead. I promise to be back Monday with some Soulful sewing!!

Have a great weekend! XX Maureen
