Red : :

Yesterday we said goodbye to the last of our family visitors and another magical holiday season. It was so good & special, and I hope yours was too! After saying adieu I probably should have dove right into the decoration removal duties & New Year's cleaning, but instead I felt called to the sewing room. Finally, my chance to sew!

I had shared my hopeful post several weeks back to attempt, again this year, to make a holiday themed quilt for my family. I pulled my fabrics, sketched out my idea, began cutting, but just never found the time. Then I humbled my plan to a pillow sized project and still, all I had to show days before Christmas was a stack of red HST's.

Red!

HST's in Red

At first I considered creating a quick & simple zigzag pillow, thinking ahead to Valentine's Day, but after a little shuffling and rearranging I decided on a classic but scrappy Bear Paw block!

Scrappy Red Bear Paw

Made with my very first cuts from my own rolls of Wild & Free, combined with shades of reds & pinks paired with creamy low volume fabrics, and a little pop of my Folk Plaid blue. I do love this first block!

It finishes at a large 25" square and is made up of 4" squares and half square triangle units, in case you're interested in making your own. My plan is to make a large quilt, I'm thinking three rows of three blocks with sashing!

Photographing my finished red block this morning to share here felt a little symbolic. It's not a color I ever wear or often use, but it's such a happy color, so joyful. A perfect first project for the New Year!

  2. Love this to pieces! I have my pile of Wild and Free waiting for an idea. This could be it! I love the block size, too. It adds a modern element. I think I will make each block a different scrappy color with W & F as the inspiration palette. Jerilynn

    1. Ooh! I love this idea! I'm going to see how many blocks I can get from the HSTs I've already made. But for the center or a corner block I'm already thinking of either creating a blue block with a Floral Keepsake center in honey yellow or a yellow block with the same Folk Plaid blue center as this first one. We'll see!! For now I am loving this red!! ♡

  8. Beautiful. I love red, but rarely use it. Can hardly wait to see what you put with this and what the final outcome will be.

  9. this is such a gorgeous block - love the reds and your fabrics of course - I really like your use of a variety of lights for the background (instead of one solid) - I also like the four patch for the bear palm instead of one bigger square - is one square traditional? I don't know. I like the 4 patch method that you have used and the way you have set the paws that creates movement for the eye to travel round the block. terrific start to the New Year and wishing you a happy and healthy New Year 2015.

  17. I just finished mt frist two quilts for two of my grandkids. Only three more to go. My oldest grandson loves red and a scrappy bearclaw is a great inspiration! All the quilts my grandmother made were scrappy so I just love this idea. Thanks so much.
