Progress Report : :

My Sewing Table

Yesterday I finally managed to start this new quilt. It was seeming as though beginning this one just wasn't meant to happen there for a little bit, sheesh! Happy that's behind me. Beginning is so, so good!

Wednesday Sewing

And, I'm extra happy to report that I accomplished quite a bit!

Endless Summer Fabric Strips

Batting Strips

Easy Straight Strips

I share often that both my quilt as you go tutorial and my newest qayg tutorial for my Herringbone quilt pattern are both extremely quick makes. Well this version of adding each strip straight across rather than on the diagonal, working my way down the panels of cut batting, one piece after the other definitely exceeds those speedy methods!

Easy Strips

It's exactly the perfectyly laid-back, enjoyable quilt project I'm so needing right now!

Loving it!

  3. Maureen, I have to say that I just LOVE that you shared how you just weren't "feeling" some of the colors, so pulled them out and put some others in. Sometimes I get so intimidated by quilting because I want the finished project to turn out nice and I'm afraid I'm going to screw it up. Your comment reminded me that it's artistry. The techniques might need practice in order for my quilts to turn out nice, but not to worry so much about the color/pattern selection and just go with my heart/gut. Thanks for the reminder! (BTW, I think this is going to be your sunniest quilt!)

  5. As a physical therapist with (now) 2 very painful shoulders ( hazards of the job ..... too much lifting ) .... I LOVE your QAYG methods !!! My very first quilting class (in 1986 ......which sounds SO LONG AGO ..... ugh) was a QAYG class using Georgia Bonsteel techniques for quilt as you go ( but she called it "Lap Quilting" because she would hand quilt each block then join them.) ANYHOW ..... can't wait to see your finished quilt !!!!

  6. Question - do you use a cotton warm and natural or a polyester warm and natural? I haven't used the polyester blend one yet, but using the all cotton hasn't shown to shrink significantly. Ding! Just figured out a project to do with your quilt as you go process! Thanks for the inspiration!

  8. I love those colors. I'm usually not a big fan of peach, but it looks great with the yellow and teal. I need to try this method soon, and I am making the switch to cotton batting. I'm glad you shared what you use above. Can't wait to see the finished quilt!

    1. This is just the top and batting. If you follow the links to my tutorials, you'll see how the backing is added after the quilted quilt top is finished. :)

  16. Does this make the seams really thick and stick up where the blocks are joined? Just wondering. I do like the idea and may try this myself at some point.

  19. Well I think this is going to be lovely. I saw your herringbone when you made it and had to make one, then another. I love using up some scraps that I had. The only things is my scraps are just as big so this will be next for me I think. I have strips and blocks of batting just waiting to be used up. I can't wait for your finish..or another peek!!!!

  20. Oh I love these colors! I just started a king-sized quilt using your herringbone QAYG tutorial - I'm loving how quickly it comes together, especially on my small machine.

Do you have any tips on how you cut the batting strips? I found that to be a VERY difficult task in my project and thought you might have some insight. I ended up cutting mine on the floor with a large cutting mat and rotary cutter - how do you do it?

  23. Gorgeous fabric! Do you sew directly the fabric on the batting as you go along? IS it sewn together the same way as you tutorial?

  29. I love those fabrics - so cheerful. I used your QAYG method for making my husband a Nebraska Huskers quilt & followed your instructions for your quilt with the typewriter in it. It was so easy & fun to make. I found old Husker logos online & printed them on fabric. I love your blog & ideas. It's so inspiring & makes me want to run (not walk) to my sewing room.
