Sunshine Pillows : :

Sunny Pillows

Last week I pulled this sunny stack of fabrics from my stash, all Art Gallery Fabrics mostly from Bonnie Christine's newest line Sweet As Honey, with a couple Chromatics, a Reminisce floral, Squared Element in Lemon, and a Tule Folklore print added to the mix! A very happy collection!

For Sunny Pillow Making

With quick cutting & piecing and some shiny yellow variegated Aurifil quilting, I made myself a very cheerful set pillows!

I finished both with binding, my most favorite way to finish pillows these days!

  1. Maureen, these pillows are lovely. The binding on the edges is a great idea.
I have a few questions about pillows:
    1. Do you use pillow forms?
    2. Do you have recommendations for choosing filler for pillows?
    3. How do you size your pillow cover to the inner form? For example, if you buy a 12 x 12 pillow form, do you make your sham the same size? You have such a nice, full fit on your pillows.
    Thanks!!

    1. Thank you Sarah! I do use pillow forms always. I recommend picking up the ones available at Jo-ann Fabrics. They are usually 40-50% off. For sizes, I like my pillows to feel very sturdy and full, especially since pillows will lose their fluff and will flatten over time from use. For these I made a 15" square finished pillow cover to fill with a 16" pillow insert. The fox pillows I sell in my shop are made to be 1/2" - 1" under 12" for me to use a 12" insert, etc.. It definitely makes for a nice, full pillow!

  2. In the back of my pillows whenever I do an envelope closure I get some fabric sagging? Do you have any suggestions on why and what I can do to fix it? Thanks!

    1. I had the same problem and fixed it by adding a fabric covered button on the bottom half, then a loop of fabric on the top- very pretty!

    2. I think the trick is to be very generous with the backing fabric overlap, for example -- for these 15" pillow covers, I cut my two pieces for the back at around 11" x 15.5," hemming one piece and binding the raw edge of the outer fabric because I love that look. I hope this helps!

  11. That is interesting that you made the covers up to 1" smaller than the pillow insert. I recently made pillow covers for my cousin's breakfast nook. I used a grey canvas, and I actually made the pillow covers 1/2" larger, thinking that they would shrink when washed. Since they were used over a bolster seat cushion, the pillows I made covers for were lined up on the wall to sit against.
