You & Me Quilt

Yesterday morning I made an extra, extra long roll of binding in Denyse Schmidt's Complex Plaid in Maple and finished off another new quilt, with enough binding left for at least one more!

Shelburne Falls Quilt Binding

Of course I turned to that trick using the extension table that came with my Janome to neatly feed me my binding, I love that!!

All that red plaid against the navy parts of my quilt, along with the bright yellow Aurifil quilting, looks especially nice to me! I was a little nervous about the bright yellow at first, but I'm so glad I went for it!

We took a quick drive to the fields for this photo shoot, where lots of sunflowers, black eyed Susans, Queen Anne's Lace, Goldenrod and Vervain are in full flourish. It was so, SO beautiful!

This photo of the back of my quilt, with all that warm flannel, is one of my very favorites!

Shelburne Falls Quilt back

Shelburne Falls Quilt backed in flannel

I had originally ordered the entire Shelburne Falls collection by Denyse Schmidt with a picnic quilt in mind. Once it arrived, I immediately sketched out my idea with no particular meaning behind my plan other than wanting to come up with a pattern that would showcase the three different palettes in this collection nicely. I did struggle there for a little while, but once things clicked this quilt became something very special to me, very quickly. While I worked away the plaid and various floral prints returned me to a very special memory of mine. Just a little more than twelve years ago, almost to this day, when I was just twenty years old, Kevin walked from his Mom's house on Main Street where he was staying, to my parents house out of town to see me, picking a few of each of the different wild flowers he found along his way. Wild flowers are my very favorite! That day he came to the door holding a bouquet for me, wearing a red and navy plaid shirt that he wore almost everyday back then, along with his sweet smile and adorable dimples, of course. That image of him is a permanent fixture in my mind and one I will always treasure. Like a beautiful song that seems written just for you, the mix of vintage-y florals with the stripes and plaid, along the colors and charm of this collection brought me back to those sentimental days. And so this quilt quickly became OURS. A special memory embraced in pieced together fabrics and lots of quilting stitches. An assemblage of wobbly pieces beautifully blended together to make OUR quilt, perfect. So, I'm calling this my You & Me Quilt and we both already love it so much!

My favorite!

    1. It's amazing how nostalgic a quilt can be, but I think that's one of the reasons so many of us are choosing to both make handmade and buy handmade these days. Its so special!!

    1. Thank you, Janelle! Choosing a colorful or variegated thread always feels like a risky choice in the begging, but so far it has always paid off! I love that little extra bit of color, and it makes the quilt look a little more interesting and special up close.

      Thanks again!

  15. Oh I just love this! So nice to stop by and see your lovely pictures.

May I ask what your flannel backing fabric is?

    1. Thank you so much! The backing is actually a 100% cotton flannel shirting fabric that I just picked up at Joann Fabrics for $7.99/yd - a 40% off coupon. It matches the Shelburne Falls colors perfectly, but I can't find the one I bought online. You can see some other options here -- http://www.joann.com/search/_flannel%20shirting%20fabric/?page=1

      Thanks again!

    1. It's usually the fabrics I'm using that makes me think of where I'll be taking my photos. Sometimes the design, like with my recent Zig Zag quilt, which made we want to find a staircase or a barn painted a certain color for another. I'm not sure with what quilt it started, but I recently decided that I would go to a new beautiful place here in Potter County, Pa to take my pictures. And now we are all really into it, especially my husband, which you can probably tell from the big rock photo above -- that was ALL his idea! :)

  27. like any great relationship there is always struggles at the beginning to make it "right", i think the quilt and the making of it tell that story too, you loved it right away but you struggled too, i love how it turned out, and the story of that long ago day is so sweet;)
i really do like the 3 colorways together, i have layer cake of Shelboure Falls, i'm going to keep this in mind for sure, thanks

  28. Your quilt turned out great (as I knew it would). What wonderful pictures you have taken. The photo of the quilt in the field of sunflowers really brings out the yellow and gold colors of the quilt. What a fun quilt. I hope you get many more years of memories with that quilt.

    1. Thank you so much, Kathleen! The yellow and gold in this collection, along with the bright yellow Aurifil thread are some of my very favorites parts of this quilt when I look at it closely! It makes me happy to read that you could see those elements from my photo. It was so pretty to see all the bright sunflowers and watch the sun set across that field!

  33. Wonderful sentiments for a beautiful quilt. I will try your trick for feeding the binding! I use bias binding, so I do need for it to stay put and not get stretched out while I sew.

  34. Wow, that's a lot of binding. And given how I use mine, it would be wrapped around me about 5 times by now ;o) Love the quilt though!

Love the quilt - looks fabulous, great pictures and a lovely story to boot. You should maybe have called it the "we have it all quilt!" ;o)

  41. I love the binding and the backing, but what I think I love most about this quilt is that it shows a style that is so uniquely you. There is something about your quilts that link them together, just by looking at them you can see that, ah, yes, that is a Maureen Cracknell original right there. I think it might have something to do with how you play with colour.

  46. I love the yellow quilting thread, although I'd be prepared to stretch it a little and maybe describe it as 'gold'! :-) I've experimented with invisible thread, but so far it's not for me, and finding the right colour can be a struggle. Here, your yellow is spot on. Well done for being brave!

  48. First time on your blog (I am a fan of Aurifil on Facebook, that's how I ended up here). If someone had given me the colour combo you chose and asked me to make a quilt I would have though they are crazy. Bright red and pink? with blues and flowers and plaids? What? and YELLOW thread to top it off? Oh, but you are one adventurous genious! This quilt is absolutely wonderful. Love at first sight! So outside of my comfort zone and yet, that I am thinking "I wish I had thought of this one" first time here, but I will be back for more...

I hope the You and Me quilt and you and yours enjoy many happy moments all together

I make a LOT of quilts for Project Linus and am going to choose wild fabrics for the bindings from now on! Yours is so successful and fun!

Enjoy the memory of your reason behind this quilt and look forward to many more. A+++++

  56. *sigh* Love the quilt, the pictures and the story! I think DS fabrics are my very favorite now that I've been sewing for a little while- they're current without being trendy, retro without being old-fashioned...I guess 'timeless' is the best word. Love what you did with them!!
