A Glimma & Linen Quilt Finish : :

A Glimma & Linen Quilt

I'm so happy to have a quilt finish to share here today!

I made this quilt top back in January, yikes, when things had finally slowed down after our move into the new house and those busy holiday weeks. It came together quickly, in a late night sewing session, completely on impulse after I had laid out my Glimma Charm Pack to get a good look at this new collection by Lotta Jansdotter. I added in some white and medium gray linens from my stash and got to work!

Glimma & Linen

I had shared last week that I was having some pucker issues in a couple of spots -- many thanks to those of you who offered up your advice! Well, I'm happy to report that after some heavy quilting and a good tumble in the washing machine and dryer, I think I'm the only one who would notice. In the end I think it started as a piecing problem that went unnoticed until I started my quilting. Lesson learned!

The unexpected bonus of my mistake is the crinkle effect that this quilt received right away from that washing. Usually I prefer my quilts to keep that flat look for as long as possible, but this quilt was made to be crinkly! It softened up beautifully!! I was a little worried throughout the process, having pre-washed my linen but not the Glimma pre-cuts. Thankfully it came out better than I imagined!

Using both a cotton Aurifil 50wt in white and a gray from my Tula Pink thread collection, I added my quilting stitches only on the linen -- with a dense quilting around the borders and inside the larger shapes, and some wider pivot quilting on the inside of each of the linen charm squares.

The back is finished in the Kulla Glimma print in Slate and for the binding I used Korkek in Dandelion.

The finished quilt measures a 44" x 48", a good size to keep on the couch I think!

I have to also share that these quilt photo shoots are becoming such a family favorite! I held this quilt up to Kevin and the kids and we brainstormed where to take it, together. It's pretty special and an awesome reminder of how gorgeous Potter County, Pa is!

You can find Glimma available in the shops of my sponsors -- Contemporary Cloth, Stash Fabrics, The Intrepid Thread, Pink Castle Fabrics, Moona Fabrics, & the Fat Quarter Shop!

Happy Monday, friends!!  Maureen

    1. Thank you Mary! Both the waterfall and fence are along a road maybe 5-10 minutes from our house. We decided this quilt needed a gray or gray and white fence for the backdrop and Kevin knew just where to go! I got some great photos of the kids, too! :)

  4. Great quilt and AWESOME photo shoot! WOW! You live in such a beautiful area. I loved the "crinkle" look in the quilt. I have never used linen, but with your quilt, may give it a try. Thanks for sharing.

    1. Thank you Christina! Potter County is actually called "God's Country" because of all of it's pristine wilderness! You should definitely give linen an try sometime, it all softened up so nicely! Just remember to pre-wash. I've read that linen shrinks much more than the quilting cottons!

  7. Beautiful quilt, Maureen! I told you it would work out. As someone who grew up with the older methods of quilting, I will be interested to see if you have any issues with the unquilted squares. Originally everything was quilted because the batting would shift and lump if not anchored every couple of inches. However, with the new batting materials, this may not matter anymore. Wonderful job...and I wish I had your eye for color. (Sigh!)

    1. Thank you! I'm actually a little concerned about that myself. It seems to be completely fine after the washing it received, but I'm still wondering of it would be smart for me to quilt a large X inside each of those Glimma Charm squares. What do you think?

  8. This quilt is really stunning. I love the quilting and the way you used the gray fabric to define the charm square sections. Beautiful photos!

    1. Thank you Teresa! I had asked my readers to help name this quilt, based on that design back in January when I first shared the top. There were so many wonderful suggestions, I couldn't choose! This design does work great for those special charm square collections. I do hope to make another one eventually, and when I do I plan to keep track for a pattern or tutorial. Thanks again!!

    2. I'm working on a charm square quilt now, but I just framed each charm with sashing. It's a little dull, so I'm having to do some appliqué in the border to make it more fun. I like your creative way of using the charm squares better than mine!

  18. It looks great. I love the way the quilting makes the linen an alternative focus. You can look at it and see the colours, or the pattern of the pieces, or the quilting. V clever!

  29. I love it! it's so fresh and clean. Isn't it great when snags in the sewing process work themselves out?

and I have to say thank you so very much for being so amiable online. It's so nice that you are so responsive and helpful. I asked about any crocking issues on Instagram and you were so kind to get back to me. I've had my share of sparkly lint in the dryer and fabrics losing their glittery fun. Thank you so much!
