Quilting As I Go : :

Yesterday I had planned to share some lucky finds I thrifted over this past weekend, but right away I got so into working on my ABC quilt, I couldn't pull myself away! My crazy goal is to have it finished Friday night, to be gifted on Saturday, and I actually think I'm going to make it!!

QAYG ABC Blocks

All thirty blocks are pieced, quilted, and trimmed to 10.5" squares!

ready for applique

I'm really glad I spent most of yesterday sewing, only stopping to take care of Penelope and to take & share some photos of our last full school-day as a threesome...

Here the kids are this morning, humoring me just before they headed out the door for their last day, a half day, of school!

last day of school!

This school year certainly flew by, faster than any year in my life! So much has happened and so many things have changed. It was nice to take a moment this morning to look back at that first day photo, and compare. Wow!!

2012 - 2013 school year

And now, I have just a few short hours to get going on this quilt before our Summer vacation officially starts! I'm using HeatnBond Feather Lite for the first time and so far I'm loving it! I can definitelty feel a difference once the pieces are pressed to my quilt blocks, you can't even tell!

There's so much to be excited about today, wish me luck!!    Maureen

And, thanks for all the sweet comments on my latest "stitched sketch" project! I can't wait to share more!!

    1. Thanks Leslie! The quilt back will be a collage of fabrics, made up of the large pieces I have leftover from my blocks! :)

The blocks are already quilted to a cotton batting, using the quilt as you go tutorial I shared here -- http://maureencracknellhandmade.blogspot.com/2012/10/a-quilt-as-you-go-tutorial.html

  7. Relative newbie to quilting...I'm only on my 8th... How will you put these blocks together if they are already quilted/backed? Rag quilt? I love the idea of quilting one block at a time!

  8. When you use the quilt along method, do you plan your blocks (cut out all your pieces before hand), or do you just cut and sew and you go, piecing them together randomly?
I'm going to be doing a scrap quilt, and I'm using 20+ fabrics, and I am worried that if I cut as I go I might leave some colors out or not spread the prints evenly.... :/

  11. Great looking blocks! Waiting for pix of the alphabet adhered to the square. I recently bought 10 yds. of Heat 'N Bond Feather Lite. Glad you have this tested out. How are you going to join these squares together? Will you be doing a tutorial?

    1. This entire project will be a tutorial I share sometime next month, featuring the Feather Lite. I wrote my post so quick today, I meant to write that I am loving the feather lite in comparicson to the HeatnBond Lite that I typically use for applique. There is no feel to the hand that a product was used once my letters were appliqued. I'm excited!!

  20. Hi Maureen,
I so want to give this a try! I read through your tutorial and I had one quick question. Do you have to lower your feed dogs or cover them? Do you have any problems with the batting and the feed dogs? Hope I didn't miss this in the tutorial. I really want to give this a try since big quilts are so daunting to try to machine quilt!
    Thanks Jan
BTW the children have really grown this year, and Penny looks like she is growing too.:)
