Thrifted Quilt Top : :

Why, hello! I'd love for you to meet my new thrifted quilt top today!!

thrifted quilt top

Isn't it amazing??!!

triangle hexagons -- thrifted quilt top

I found this beauty yesterday for such a steal! It's completely hand sewn!!

by hand

It's made of these scrappy triangles and sewn into hexagons. Such a marvelous kaleidoscopic image!

Yes! Thrifted Quilt

How fun is this one! Brights with a dark charcoal-y gray!

Now I have questions --

-- it smells a little? But not too bad, just like something really old. Do you have any ideas for laundering?

-- what to do with it? Finish it? It's so special I don't want to ruin it! What would you do?

And, can I just say that my husband is truly all that is this Handmade Ryan Gosling business. So much so, that he actually checked out the photos and captions with me the first day I noticed the Ryan Gosling images popping up everywhere and we laughed so hard together. He is so supportive and amazing and really does know just how to speak right to my crafty heart!

Handmade Mr. Cracknell

And, now he's going to kill me! hehe

  1. Once I'd picked myself up off the floor from amazement at your find, I fell off again laughing at your last picture :D

I think you should definitely finish into a whole quilt. It's too beautiful not to be used and loved!

  3. Wow Maureen, its beautiful! And it looks so modern! I would check all the seams, fixing any holes, then handwash, and finish it!

  4. Yes, you should finish it! I would love it if someone finished some of mine and loved them. For the smell. I would try washing on the gentle cycle with your normal detergent and fill the softener cup with vinegar. The Vinegar help kills the mildewy smell. I do this with my towels every week and they almost never have that sour smell. I also do this when I forget and leave a load in the washer and it turns. Almost always works, sometimes it needs to go twice. You are so lucky!

  6. oh wow, maureen! that is a lovely quilt top! it amazes me that someone would send something like that to a thrift store, but i guess it makes it nice for us to find, right?

love the "hey girl" photo. it's cool to have a helpful guy for stuff like photo shoots! :)

  7. oh my gracious! it was 25.00 and 30% off!!! you are a lucky lucky lucky girl! i would make sure all the seams are secure and then i would hand wash it with a great smelling laundry soap and finish it. my first thought is send it to a long arm quilter but i think it would be beautiful hand quilted too. hand quilting would take forever but it would be worth it i think! and i love your hey girl! hilarious!

  8. I agree with Sherry on the washing of it! And wow, are you lucky! Good for you, Maureen! I know you will enjoy it!

  9. Gorgeous!! What a find! I've washed vintage linens before, just a hand wash or very delicate cycle if your machine has one, otherwise hand wash in the bathtub. I usually use a baby detergent like Dreft and then a vinegar/water rinse to freshen and get rid of any smells. Let it soak if need be. I've heard of something called Orvus, but have never used it.

    Good Luck!

  10. It's beautiful...I'm new into quilting, so I don't have any advice for you. Love that pic of your husband.... ♥ that so many girls are doing that now! With captions of what we think/wish they might be thinking!!!

  11. LOL...love the pic of your hubby. You make me laugh.

I don't know what to do with it...but I think you could possibly launder it on gentle? or maybe try one of those dry clean things where you pop it in the dryer and it cleans it? Dryell?

I don't like musty, old smells, but you could also hang it outside for some fresh air? =) Have fun.

  12. HAHA - that is so funny! The quilt top is amazing. I think I would hand wash it with woolite or something and if it were me I'd finish it as-is. Awesome find!

  14. You are blessed in so many ways it's almost unimaginable! However, it couldn't happen to a nicer person.... :O)

  15. omg, love it!!! I think I would want to finish it, definitely hand quilting it. As far as laundering it, I would use woolite and maybe handwash just in case. And love the pic of the hubs at the end, perfect!!

  16. lol, I loved meeting you all this weekend. I hope we can talk often. As for your quilt top I would wash it at the laundromat in a big machine on gentle with dreft or some other baby type wash. Or hand wash it with the same. Also be careful when its wet because the weight of the quilt can snap the threads.

  17. That is hilarious. Handmade Ryan Gosling is such a great pick me up. But hey, having a husband that would say the same thing? - so much cooler. Lucky lady, you are!

  18. Thanks for making me laugh. Love your "Ryan Gosling", and that quilt top is gorgeous!

  19. That is AWESOME!!! The guy, the picture and the quilt top! I've seen several at my thrift store too....I can't imagine all the work that goes into a top just being discarded! I received one, hand-stitched hexies, that was my great grandmothers and it smelled too. I have it stored in a plastic bin with a box of baking soda right now. I was afraid to wash it before it was finished....and it might be a bit before I get there! ;)

  20. What a beautiful find! My husband has a quilt from his grandmother which she made from pieces of dresses she used to wear. The sad part is I washed it in the machine a few times and it's falling apart. I've never done any quilting at all, but I think if I have time it is something I should be able to fix. It's just so big! And that photo of your husband is awesome! Love it :)

  21. That is hilarious because I was totally JUST looking at my Ryan Gosling Hey Girl I keep on my phone. Gotta get a daily dose you know?! Anyway, isn't it awesome when you find such a great bargain. I haven't found any vintage quilt tops but that one is amazing. Thanks for sharing!!

  22. What an amazing find! I would handwash it in the bathtub with woollite and gently squeeze out the water, lay it out to dry over a drying rack. I can't believe someone would just part with it after all that work! ps: hope you're feeling better xo

  23. All that piecing work done for you! Congratulations. I would finish it so that you can enjoy it.

  24. Wow! What a treasure!! That photo of your hubby is too funny!

  25. Oh, what a lucky find! If it's in good condition, you should finish it.
Thanks for making me laugh today. I needed it! :)

  26. What a lucky find! If you want to wash before you finish (you will, won't you!?) you could put it in a pillowcase or similar so there is less stress on the fragile seams then gently wash in a mild soap.

It looks like a lot of time and heart went into their work!

  29. If you have some place to hang it outside. I would spritz it with vinegar and water and hang in the sun. It is beautiful, you are very lucky to have found it.

  30. Steal of the century! Man of the year!

I would absolutely finish it and use it (gently? guest bed?)
Kuddos on the awesome guy - there is nothing I love more than when I have a new sewing project of some kind, get in a pickle, and my hubby comes and helps me out with design ideas, color choices, or whatever.

  31. Oh my goodness!! I just choked on my water reading this blog post...so hilarious. Oh nice deal on that awesome quilt.

  32. Beautiful find! Are you sure those aren't Ryan Gosling's shoes peeking out under that quilt? They look so "Celeb" ;)

    ReplyDelete
  33. Awwww. Sweet husband. I would finish the quilt top for sure. You won't ruin it! It'll be safer finished with all those hand done seams secure in a quilt sandwich! If the smell is too much for you to work with, I'd wash it in the tub, with a sheet under it for lifting it out of the water. That way you're not lifting the wet quilt top by itself and stressing the seams with the weight. I'd use a hand-soak gentle soap like Eucalan wash. What a special thing to have!!! Do you have a vintage sheet you could use for a backing?

  34. Ok, that cracked me up!! Great find, definitely finish it, it is beautiful and all that hand stitching is worth preserving.

  35. Maureen, what a find, I just went to a Quilting Estate Sale ( I blogged about it too) it was awesome, some fabrics so old they had a slight smell, I got home and washed them just like I normally would, just detergent and a tiny amount of bleach, then dried them in the dryer, then ironed them and there is zero smell. I think the tiny bit of bleach knocks out any mildew. I have never tried vinegar but I dislike the smell of vinegar that is why I never tried it. There is nothing better than finding a garage sale or estate sale of a quilter!

  36. What treasures!! (The quilt and your hubby!)

  37. The picture of your husband is FANTASTIC!! Awesome find!! Quilt too :)

  38. I saw a hint somewhere, to put an old sheet in the bathtub first, then the quilt, wash in cold (really just swish the water through), then you can use the sheet to lift the quilt out, roll it in a couple of towels to get out most of the water, then spin in the machine (I've only bought old blocks, not a whole quilt, so I don't have personal experience). The other thing you might want to think about is to finish it first--then it will take machine wash and dry no problem. What a treasure!

  39. Great find! I would finish it off for sure. You will get alot more enjoyment out of it that way. Your husband sounds great too :)

  40. Oh Maureen, Your picture and caption of your hubby just cracks me up, LOL. My guy is also a keeper and keeps telling me I can buy a long arm machine, but I just can't see where I would put it! As for your amazing quilt find, I would hand wash it after checking closing for any needed repairs. It looks like it's really good shape from your pictures. I had a an old top a while back and a member of my quilt guild suggested laying an old WHITE sheet in the bottom of my bathtub, then putting the old quilt top on top of it. After you soak it in a gentle cleaning solution (they sell several types at quilt shops and Joann's) you can use the sheet to lift it out of the tub. This prevents putting too much stress on any one spot while you're lifting it. I would absolutely finish it. Gyleen Fitzgerald is a quilt designer/teacher and I've been lucky to take some classes from her and see several of her trunk shows. She's taken old tops and machine quilted them and vintage blocks and added modern blocks/borders to them and machine quilted them. They're fantastic. So go boldly and have fun. Be sure to post when you've finished!

I'd try baking soda soak for the smell?

  43. Fabulous find, and hilarious photo. I'd suggest finishing it before you wash it, actually. I would be really concerned about those lovely hand stitches popping out....

  44. What about a nice eucalyptus wool wash? It is an amazing find.

  45. Fantastic find. Hope you can finish it soon so we can see it in all it's glory. What kind of quilting are you planning to do on it? One wouldn't want to draw the attention away from the piecing, don't you think? Good luck with the washing.

  46. Fabulous find! Love those old greens, and the browns with the rosebuds. Triangles, made to hexies--super! Feel better!

  47. This is a long-shot and you might find an easier option, but if you know any Arab ladies, ask them about burning bukhoor and oud. The Arab ladies use the smoke to scent their hair, clothes and soft furnishings. Good luck!

    ReplyDelete
  48. Ha! Love that pic of your hubby! Mine is the same :) Aren't we lucky!

Not sure if you can buy it over in the US, but some gentle eucalyptus wool mix detergent would be a good way to wash it - the eucalyptus gives a lovely clean fresh scent. I haven't read through all the comments so I sorry if I am repeating someone else's suggestion :)

  49. White vinegar as a rinse should do the trick! It's stunning.

  50. Hahaha! Love it. You have a GOOD man! I found you through Michael at Inspired by Charm. Love your what your doing. I'm not a quilter but a dedicated crafter and DIYer. I wish I knew how...although I'd never find the time. :) I thought those Ryan Gosling pins were so flippin' funny. It's cool that your husband plays along with you. My Honey is very accomodating too. ;) Have a nice day!

  51. OH EM GEEEEEE Maureen!!! This thing is amazing!!! I love old quilts like that so much. Doesn't it kind of make you sad though to think about the gazillion hours someone put into this, and then you bought it for like $15? I mean, good for you. But sad for them. At least you will love it like it deserves.

  52. What a find! It's gorgeous. I'd definitely finish it. What about waiting until spring and just hanging it outside for a while? That might help with the smell.

  53. Your husband is a cutie!! I just went to the Ryan Gosling site and nearly peed my pants!! SO funny - seriously, there was snorting involved. 8) I admit, though, I don't GET the RG thing, at all!! Maybe 'cause I haven't seen The Notebook - I avoid Nicholas Sparks like Ebola!! Those captions are classics! :) Thanks for the great laugh. Good luck with the new quilt top!!
