As always, thank you so much for your interest and wonderful comments on these little owls! It has been an absolute blast putting the combinations of wool, felts, fabrics, and threads together, with my helpers, for the parade and giveaway. The giveaway has been running from April 12th all the way through today - Earth Day, April 22nd! To Win : : All you have to do is follow and leave a comment. Today I'd also love for you to share something that you do in an effort to be a good steward of our planet. Stuff like recycling, growing your own food, anything to be more green! A winner will be chosen randomly from the comments, they will be notified by email tomorrow, and I will announce them here, as well. Good luck, have fun and be green!
The kids are always eager to help with choosing the yarns and the fabrics, and so it's only fair that they get to name them --- But, today Mr. Cracknell decided he wanted to name this owl - Elwood OwlYou can read more about the history of Earth Day, as well as the mission and the core issues behind it here.
Love the eyes...very different from the rest of the clan. Love Earth Day! We are going to work in the yard today. Probably plant some trees and flowers.
ReplyDeleteLove it! So cute!
ReplyDeleteWe too are going to begin planting our seeds today:) My fam tries to do its part with recycling, composting, taking our own bags to the store, etc.
Happy Earth Day!
Aww how cute!! I love that your kids helping you. Kids always have great creativity!
ReplyDeleteI'm recycling our old computers today! Happy Earth Day!
We recycle- glass & #2 plastic (I wish we had a better program around here) and compost- Bryan is so proud of his happy little organic garden.
ReplyDeleteBut the biggest impact we have would be Bryan's business- when he was planning to go out on his own to repair appliances I asked if we could make appliance recycling a part of it.
There's not much money in it, but we really push for the old appliances to be fixed up and resold. What is not fixable is stripped for parts and given to scrap. It bothers us to see what a disposable society we've become. You buy a refrigerator and the company expects you to buy a new one in 5 years (they are built to outlast only their warranty)... as consumers we've brought this on ourselves. I think that trend is changing though. Whether it's the economy or greener thinking, it seems we're all moving in the right direction. Happy Earth Day!
Maureen, your owls floor me. Every day I think I've found my favorite. How will your winner ever choose? How can you bear to part with them. Amazing.
ReplyDeleteI guess I just reuse everything I can possibly think of a reuse for. For my baby's birth in August I cut up thrift store flannel sheets into receiving blankets, then when they were too small, I further cut them up and sewed them into cloth wipes since we cloth diaper.
I also refuse to buy ziplock baggies that my daycare throws out - I bought some reusable sandwich bags. I also save and reuse every single plastic bread bag and all the ziploc plastic bags that other things come in, like our tortillas and cheese. I have quite a collection now - they last a long time too. I just make sure they don't go to daycare!
Happy Earth Day! :D To be more green we grow our own herbs, we use all-natural insect repellants that we make ourself, all natural face cleaser which we make ourself, I crochet most of the time with 100% cotton, and we usually only use a few lamps in the evening and are constantly looking for ways to save energy.:) I just love your owls! If I win, please send me a convo on etsy instead of emailing me. I'm having email issues. :( My etsy shop is www.homespunhandmaiden.etsy.com
ReplyDeleteElwood! Tell Mr he picked an awesome name :) He is so bright and distinctive, just like his name. Happy Earth Day!!!
ReplyDeleteHow adorable! So cute!

Hey Maureen Ive been meaning to check these out properly and seriously, these are amazing! Catherine told me how talented you are, and it's really interesting how you reinvent your designs as you learn more skills. And I love your color palate, so perfect for summer.
ReplyDeletesuper cute- HAPPY EARTH DAY!!!!!! :)
ReplyDeleteOMG I LOVE this little guy! He needs to live in my office :)
ReplyDeleteToday is the grand opening of my store Hello Magpie, where we celebrate function and form, classic beauty, and timeless quality. We also try to make life a little better (and a little greener) by offering clever gifts + goods made of natural, organic, handmade, recycled, upcycled, biodegradable +/or vintage materials. As often as possible, we source things made in the U.S.A. and all of our packaging is 100% recycled, recyclable or biodegradable.
This is just one thing I do to embody the spirit of conscious consumerism + helping protect our planet :)
Happy earth day! what a cute item! we recycle, take short showers and air dry our laundry :)
ReplyDeletehere is my blog post about earth day http://lifesmart-it.blogspot.com/2010/04/reuse-save-money-and-save-earth.html
Very cute owls! I just love this. Thanks for a great giveaway! Got to share with friends!
ReplyDeleteElwood owl is so cute! Is his brother Jake owl out there somewhere?!
ReplyDeleteOn of the ways I try to be eco conscious is we use cloth napkins and rags in our house. No paper napkins or paper towels!
I love the personality of this little guy! He looks like he could have quite the devious little owl...Kevin did an awesome job at naming him. As funny as it seems, this owl looks like an Elwood.
ReplyDeleteI'll be headed up to Potter County in the next couple of months. Hopefully, I'll be able to run in to you at one point. Can't wait to get back home and see my Aunt Russina (whom I noticed made it in to your St. Paul's Nursery school video awhile back) and my cousin Brenna. But as always, the visits home just fly by and don't seem like they are long enough!
Happy Earth Day!

great owls! The tufty 'hair' is cute!
ReplyDeleteLucy
Oh wow, that owl is VERY intense lol!
ReplyDeleteBeing eco-friendly to me means reducing, reusing and recycling - in that order!
#1 Do I really need/want this?
#2 Can I buy it used or make it?
#3 Is it recyclable or at least biodegradable?
Most of the time I find I can do without something new and buying vintage or making something myself is so much more rewarding.
I like the eyes on this one, make him seem more serious than the others.
ReplyDeleteThis owl has such piercing eyes.
ReplyDeleteWe do so many green things...
recycle, compost, reuse everything possible, donate things away rather than throwing them out, harvest rainwater, avoid plastic bags and plastic packaging and just anything plastic, use reusable bags including little mesh bags for produce, avoid disposables, line dry laundry... all sortsa things ♥
Your owls are the cutest! Each has its own personality and individuality.
ReplyDeleteWe do what we can to be green - compulsive recycling, never use poisons on the yard or anywhere else, grow some of our own fruits and veggies, compost, support any organization we can that helps our planet and its inhabitants. Definitely a tree-hugger family. :)
Love your blog!
Elwood owl rocks, love his eyes!
ReplyDeleteWe recycle, try to buy organic products, we give clothes to charities, we thrift and try to be sensible with how much electricity we use...
cute owl!
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to have a garden so that I can grow my own food.. for now I have to hit up the farmers markets instead
new follower here! I am IN LOVE with the owl and that's saying something because I no longer have little ones and have no stuffed things sitting around. The whimsical nature is inspiring.
ReplyDeleteOk, what do I do? Well today I blogged that, aside from recycling a boatload of stuff, I also take my humongous pile of magazines to the library for reuse. It benefits the library b/c they make .10 - .20 on each one that is resold AND it's a tax write off. My problem is that I always end up coming home with just as many "new" magazines as I took. but, hey, what a bargain!
Nice meeting you.
wow again! i just love the eyes on your dolls
ReplyDeleteAwww...you don't sell these on etsy. :( I think you should. People would totally buy them
ReplyDeletewhat a cutie owl! i can't believe your owl giveaway is already over! we try to do a lot for our planet including recycling, composting, buying second hand things instead of new, cloth diapers, avoiding plastic, reusing and donating, we have some new goals for earth day too, using cloth wipes (hadn't made that switch yet), also cloth napkins at meal time, more water conservation steps and no more ziplocks (we don't use them very often now but we're going to cut them out completely). happy earth day!
ReplyDeleteoh yeah, my email is maikosmom@gmail.com and thanks for the blog comment! it is a king apple tree :)hope you find one :)
ReplyDeleteThis one is SASSY !!!
ReplyDeleteHappy Earth Day! :D
ReplyDeleteHow absolutely adorable!!!
ReplyDeleteOh my! I'm so glad I found your blog. I love owls!
ReplyDeleteTo conserve energy, I'm careful to not waste water or electricity or food!
