A Wanderlust Quilt : :

Yesterday, braving rain and wind, we took my Wanderlust quilt in April Rhodes' Wanderer collection out for photographing! I didn't get as many shots as I had hoped to, I forgot to snap a few of the Midnight Roof in voile quilt back altogether, but I'm too excited to share this one to wait any longer!

Because of the weather, we just took a quick trip out to one of our favorite roads nearby where both the waterfall stream above and this beautifully painted, smoky blue, rustic barn exist. Both made a perfect backdrop for the colors in my quilt!

It also wouldn't be a Cracknell quilt photoshoot if my husband didn't get to climb something!

The pattern is the first idea I quickly sketched out in a new graph paper notebook I've been using for the past several weeks and several quilts. I'm trying to make myself slowdown to take notes as I work on each new quilt in hopes to be to able to offer at least a few quilt patterns this year, and I'm finding this notebook super useful!

I love making flying geese using the make four at a time method and this new layout idea felt both fresh and unique to me!

The long arm swirly quilting that Melissa of Sew Shabby Quilting added really complements the movement of the flying geese pattern. I really love it!

I hope your week is off to a beautiful start! Thank you so much for stopping by today!! ♡ Maureen

  3. Love this quilt! Love flying geese, and the "make 4" (Eleanor Burns' method) is fab. As is the location for the shots. Your quilt just sings!

    1. Thank you Sandra! I think I first learned how to make four at a time by a post shared on Connecting Threads! :)

  4. It was very good of you to show quilters that a design can be made quite simply by using graph paper and making good notes. This is how I did it in the "olden" days before computer programs for quilt designs. It works just as well - and I think easier in many respects. Keep track of the size of your pieces and general fabric requirements. Always good to suggest a little more fabric than needed in case of "oops" mistakes - as we all make them.

Love your quilt design. It is terrific and smashing to see it against that lovely old barn board wood and stonework. Cheers!

    1. Thank you so much! I never have tried a program, I really enjoy improvisational quilting and making up the pattern as I go. I rarely end up with a quilt that is exact to what I first envision. I love the freedom of changing directions, but that's not good if you are asked for patterns. While I love creating original quilts, I would love it even more to be able to share how to create them with all my readers!

  5. This is so lovely! It makes me think of the snow capped white mountains at sunset here in NH. I absolutely love everything about it! And the fact that it's only flying geese is fantastic. Great, fresh, layout.

  13. Oooh, yet another beauty Maureen! I really love everything about this quilt (love that method of making FG too!), but especially how colors flow from one to another. Not to mention these gorgeous, inspiring photographs! (now getting my hubby to climb something for a photo...that would be an accomplishment! ha ha!) Thanks for beautiful inspirations!
