Something New : :

Besides lots of family fun throughout the long weekend, I did some serious shuffling around in my sewing room, to make a better space for the kiddos who will be joining me in here so much more once this school year wraps up later this week. I did some very rewarding thrifting, which I can't wait to share this week! And just before the weekend started, I started something new!

This quilt, that I have so enjoyed making, although a little longish in the making - I know, will be headed to it's new home at some point this Summer. I'm excited to see it go, but of course will miss it!

almost quilted

In preparation for it's absence and because I've been holding onto several new, but vague ideas for these stitched sketches for a while now, I decided to begin a new one, finally! I shared a few quick pics on Instagram and my facbook as it was starting to come together, and the response I received was pretty wonderful, thank you for that. The encouragement really made me think that I should both be making more time for these types of projects and that I should put some real effort into it.

Stitch sketching and it feels good, although I still don't know what my plan is. I need to make more time for this stuff! #noplan #threadsketching

Last night's progress. I have an idea for her that I'm excited about today! #stitched #threadsketching #mysewingmuse

With this type of work I always just sort of begin, no sketching, no solid plan, but I think next time I'm going to lay it all out and see how that works for me.

I do know where this one is headed now and I'm excited! For my last one, because of who will be receiving it, I worked with almost all Anna Maria Horner fabrics. But this time I hope to use all Art Gallery Fabrics and, of course, I'll be sure to share how it all comes together!!

How about you, did you start anything newMaureen

  7. I love your work! I'm so glad I found your blog through Facebook. Your thread portraits are stunning.

Yes, I started a new project this weekend. It is a baby girl quilt made with a charm pack from Me & My Sister's Twirl fabric line. I'm excited to get started cutting today. Yesterday I planned the quilt and figured out the dimensions I wanted. Hopefully, I'll start sewing charms to sashing strips later this week....sewing is my favorite part of the quilting process!

  9. Maureen, I always knew that you were a fantastic quilter, but now I see you're a true artist in every sense of the word. Your embroidered lady is stunningly beautiful and this is definitely a path that you should pursue. Talent like this should not be ignored but encouraged.

  19. Those are so beautiful! How do you do it? to you draw the picture first and then sew or stitch and sew at the same time?
    Beautiful!

    1. You need some type of stabilizer. This time I used a Thermo-web fusible fleece to stabilize my white fabric and I love it! Then I just started drawing with black thread loading into my sewing machine, using the straight stitch at a normal stitch length. I can then go in and do free motion quilting to draw a bit quicker and with an easy movement, but this time I wanted to try out several different stitches, so I didn't do free motion yet.

She is just learning to sew and I am excited to get together with her once a week and start new projects. Thanks for the inspiration. :)

  46. Wow, amazingly beautiful, you are sooooo talented Maureen!!! What a beautiful gift for a quilting friend - a panel made by your own hands ....sigh....!I have never used stabilizer before, is it a spray? What does it do to the fabric to help free motion 'draw'? Does it just make it stiffer so its easier to work with? Ooooh Im so inspired! Thankyou for sharing your work its truely beautiful, love to see your unique creations xxx
