Twine ♥ : :

You all know how much I love to share gorgeous stacks of fabric. Well, today I thought I'd share something else I've been crushing hard on lately -- Divine Twine! I'd also love to get your own thoughts on incorporating twine into our sewing projects.

twine

I've been using twine occasionally in my own sewing projects and it's something I'm planning to do a lot more of. One of my recent favorites was when I added a running twine stitch along the border of my Valentine Mini Quilt.

Valentine Improv Mini -- black & Binding + stitched with bakers twine

This week I'm dreaming of making a new twine pom pom garland in time for Easter decorating. Making those twine poms poms was so fun and an easy project for little helpers, too.

I also plan to add twine hand quilting to an upcoming Riley Blake Design Team project I have in the works. I think the stripey colors of twine pairs so nicely with these chevrons.

Whisker Graphics Twine and RBD Chevrons

I invited Whisker Graphics to be a sponsor here on the blog and I am so happy they accepted! Having a chance to work with such a lovely shop, who's twine is made in the USA, 100% cotton, so it's soft to the touch, bio-degradable and earth-friendly -- well I love it! I'm excited to be able to add them as a sponsor and to use such a great product in my stitch work!

Please do check out their site. I'm also using their super cute chick stickers now when shipping out my orders, when I can keep them away from the kids that is, we all love those! And, be sure to stay tuned for a Whisker Graphics giveaway or two in the weeks ahead!

Now, I'd love to know what you think about working with twine? Do you use it or have a fun idea of your own? I'd love to hear! And please share links -- I think a Divine Twine Pinterest board is in order!!

  1. I've seen twine used to wrap up a brown paper package...there's something so sweet about that. And lots of scrapbookers are using it! I like how you used it to sew up the edging. I'd like to see more ideas...of sewing with twine. I need to get a bunch for myself...I'm a huge "made in America" supporter! Go Rick Santorum!!!

  2. Twine reminds me of my macrame, hippie days in the 70s. It'll make great pompoms! I love your garlands--in fact I think they were what I noticed first in your Christmas pictures this year when I became a follower. I remember thinking "I can do that!" And, also, "why didn't I think of that??" I love the "Made in USA"--I still equate that with quality as I did when I was a small child growing up in a world where "Made in USA" and "Union Made" were the rule instead of the exception. Happy Wednesday!

  4. I love twine always have...My dad farmed tobacco years ago and he would let me have spools of his tobacco twine occasionally until....The day I got a brand new spool of tobacco twine and wrapped and tied everything in the house together like one giant spider web! I was a creative child. :) However, I got the last laugh...while in college installation pieces were just coming on the art scene...You guessed it...I was invited to create a work of art and I used twine and fishing line in a local art gallery. I think I would cry if someone told me I could never use twine, string, yarn etc in my artworks.

  5. I've never used twine, but I think it'd be fun- do you know about "couching"? Its a kind of embroidery where you simply lay the (twine) down and then take itty bitty stitches over it and into the fabric to hold it in place. I think twine would be so super cute that way! http://www.needlenthread.com/2006/10/couching-video-tutorial.html

  11. Whisker Graphics looks marvelous...I had a wonderful visit to their shop just now. This is the kind of stuff I love using for parties. I often make boxed lunches wrapped in twine to serve to my guests, and colorful little bags are fantastic for favors. Thanks for sharing such a great sponsor!

  14. I have been looking at twine when I go into the Hobby and Craft stores, but the cost is stupid. I love to use it for various projects to garden to cards, tie ribbon together.

  16. Since first seeing the gorgeous colored twines I've also been wanting to buy a bunch. I love seeing the stitching on some of the quilts I've seen using it.

On your little kite block, I'd have to embellish further myself. I think using that twine for the kite string would be adorable.

  17. could you do couching with it? I've done that with yarn before on the long arm ( a pain because I had to do the zig zag squiggles)

  18. You've opened up a whole new world for me. To me, twine has always been plain and used to wrap baking boxes or something. I had no idea it came in so many pretty colors. Now I think I just might have to get some and use it in my sewing. Fun! :) Thank you for a great post!

  29. Bakers twine seems really hard to come by in the UK, and it's really expensive. But I have a little stack that I have ordered from eBay, and so far I have used it to stitch a birthday card for my husband and to wrap presents.

  30. Maureen, I love your aesthetic and interest in American Made products. We recently launched a new line of Cotton Solids that are 100% made in America (americanmadebrand.com). I'm planning a blog tour thru each of the 50 states ("Travel the US! No Gas Required!"). It involves designing a new license plate for your state using whatever techniques you choose, writing instructions for making it, blogging about what you made with a fabric giveaway (we'll provide) and then selling your block pattern. I'm thinking 5/19-6/20 for the tour. Rather than spell out all the details, shoot me an email if you'd like to represent Pennsylvania. I think this could be really fun and spur the economy with these potentially collectible block designs. Look forward to hearing from you!
