A Giveaway : :

little folks and folksy flannel for giveaway

You all know that Anna Maria Horner is my most favorite fabric designer. Her Good Folks line and my wonderful husband Kevin are truly the reason I began to finally sew. Kevin had surprised me with a sewing machine for our 5 year Wedding Anniversary (almost 5 years ago). Actually, he really surprised me since I had never asked for or even mentioned wanting one. It's a really fancy Husqvarna Viking that sews beautifully with lots of stitch options, all digital and even will do embroidery (which I have yet to try.) He bought it refurbished at a Singer store in a town nearby, putting down $20 here and $10 there until he was ready to bring it home to me. When he did, I was thrilled! But quickly became overwhelmed by how different it was than my Great Grandmother's Singer. So it just sat there as three, yes three, more years passed by. Then one day I stumbled upon Anna Maria's blog and saw Good Folks and the rest is history!

I am so grateful for Anna's fabrics and constant inspiration! And so very grateful for my husband Kevin, who knew how much this machine would change and add to my life, even before I did!

Here is just some of what I've stitched up with her fabrics, on my much-loved machine this last year and a half that I've been sewing. Pillows, dolls, clothing, blankets, recovered chairs, deskmats, pin cushions, aprons, and curtains, oh my!
Made with AMH fabrics

In addition to Mrs. Horner and Kevin, I really want to thank all of you who visit my blog here and make it such a fun place to be. You're sweet comments and feedback and inspiration make sharing here worthwhile. So, thank you! Now let's have a giveaway!

The Prize!

One of my readers will win one yard of Folksy Flannel and another of Little Folks voile.

  1. sewing story of my own... well I have learned I should not sew when over tired. This morning the babes went for her nap and I decided to get some sewing done and I had to re-do the same seam twice - how sad to get it wrong twice in a row! (she had my up at 1:30,3, and then was up for the day at 5am!)

  2. I too sew on a Husqvarna Viking - my second. I bought my first (which I still use!) in 1974 when I started work - I saved up for months to buy it!

  3. What an inspirational story, it just shows you dont need a lifetime of sewing to create beautiful pieces. I sew on a pfaff, the same machine I learnt to sew on at school 16 years ago and I love it!

  4. You know, my husband was also a big proponent of me learning to sew. I think that's because his mom does and he realized it's such a handy skill.

  6. I kept up sewing after high school with a Janome SchoolMate and made baby gifts here and there. Last year I finally upgraded to a quilting machine. It's become my hobby, and now I am addicted to sewing and quilting for my kids. I think it's what keeps me sane!

  8. I grew up sewing with my mom and using her machine from time to time. I wasn't a super serious sewer, but enjoyed it nonetheless. I love to crochet, and have more yarn than I really know what to do with. Last year I thought to myself that I might like to take up sewing and quilting, but seeing as how my husband has had to put a stop to my yarn buying, I figured he wouldn't appreciate it if I started buying fabric as well. But then my inlaws bought me a Husqvarna for Christmas, so I had no excuse not to start! :)

  11. Many consider me a seasoned quilter, but I don't consider myself a seasoned quilter. I made my first quilt 6 years ago when my granddaughter was born. Prior to that - no sewing whatsoever. Since then? I've made maybe one quilt per year. And each time I go to make something, I have to pull out the books and surf the net to find out how to do the basics. I can't wait until I retire and can do nothing but sit around and piece/quilt all day long.

  13. Hmm, well I sew on a Brother machine, very basic, cheap, no whistles, no bells, we have a love, but mostly utter hate relationship! I think that is probably why I hardly ever sew, its pretty sad really ;)

  20. I sew on my mother’s hand-me-down Kenmore machine from the late sixties. I learned how to sew watching her for hours and hours on this machine. Every Halloween costume, Easter and Christmas dress, prom dress and pretty much all of my clothes in grade school were made by my mom on this machine. She even made my wedding dress! It sews like a dream and I intend to pass it along to one of my daughters some day. I do dream of a new Bernina or Janome though .... (maybe my husband will surprise me one day like yours did!)

  23. i love your blog and happily follow it.
my favorite sewing story is about my grandma.
my grandma always had fabric around her house..she saved my dads business shirts that he no longer wanted...old dresses that may have no longer been in style..a stained tabelclothes...pants that brother and i outgrew etc
she sewed everything by hand...altered all of or clothing..patched worn our knees and elbows on pants and jackets ....and recycled fabric to create placemats.napkins...aprons and all sorts of wonderful things.
and so this being said..now i will NOW...finally... tell you my sewing story..(LOL)
when i was in kindergarten...i came home from school one day..to find my favorite baby doll..named giovanni.(yes we are sicilian..can you tell?? my doll was named giovanni...lol)
well..while i was at school..my grandma ewed a aor of shorts with suspenders..and a buttons down dres shirt for him..with a color.. the shorts were made from an old skirt of my moms...and the shirt was one of my dad's old pajama tops...
i still remember how excited i was that day..to walk into my grandmas house and see giovanni sitting on my little wooden chair..all dressed up....
I NEVER took that outfit off of giovanni....and cherished that it was mae and sewn by hand..by my sweet grandma...the single most influential person in my life....even now...34 years after she passed away.
thank you for allowing me to remember givoanni's ...his outfit....and to share my sewing story about my grandma here..with you.

  25. how sweet! i'm a huge fan of anna maria horner myself. I can also relate to being intimidated by a new machine -- I bought a serger almost a year ago and still haven't used it because I'm just overwhelmed at trying to figure it out!! silly, i know. i hope that once I do, I'll be as much on fire as you have been this past year and a half! congrats!

I came a long way from the old treadle sewing machine my mum taught me how to sew on when I was a little girl :-)

  36. I remember making purses with my grandmother from a very young age. she kept my sister and I busy sewing these and I can picture her at her Singer treadle, wizzing up something wonderful. It seemed natural to me to buy my own as soon as I started work...layby and paid it off in 3 months. Bought the next one 25 years later from same shop and both, now all 3 have been Bernina. You stay with what you know I suppose. I just love to make something and it is the best therapy and can be real useful too.

  38. I have been sewing for 13 years. I started sewing when my oldest girl was a year old. I wanted to have the cutesy girly stuff I saw in boutiques and on ebay , so I started sewing to make her cute stuff at a cheap price. then it turned into a hobby for me. And here I am :) making stuff for other people. My favorite machine- a 1986 in cabinet dressmaker. it was given to me and I LOVE this machine. Its a workhorse and has been through alot.

  39. I've always been crafting, sometimes with a break (that happens when you're turning into a teenager). When I graduated, I was surprised when my parents bought me an amazingly great sewing machine. I haven't been sewing for very long, since I haven't had my machine for long. But I know it's something I'll keep doing.

    I think it's a lovely giveaway you're holding. :)

  40. Your story is sad to me. All that time lost when you could have been sewing! I had a husqvarna sewing machine and really liked it. When the motherboard died my dealer said it would cost more to fix than to buy a new Janome. (found out later that wasn't true. Should have known better.)

    ReplyDelete
  41. WOW! Thank you for a new giveaway!!
I start sewing when I was 16 and I used to go to learn sewing. I don't sew to much now, but I would like to have more time for it!

    ReplyDelete
  42. My own sewing story....well really I decided to take textiles at school, and then got wayyyyy to into it from there! And now I love it so much, and am very jealous of you cushions!

    ReplyDelete
  43. I've only been sewing for a little longer than a year. Nobody in my family has any sewing experience. I first took a 12 hour class to see how it'd be and got hooked instantly but agonized over whether buying a machine would really pay off as I was afraid I might not keep it up when the initial excitement faded. After some serious thinking and with some extra funding from my mom I bought my Brother and have never looked back!

Skirts, bags, plushies, pillow covers - I've created so many things in these past months and sewing is such a nice way to wind down that that I'm still as excited as in the beginning and I don't feel it'll go away any time soon. I've actually started on my first quilt!

  44. For years I cross stitch & sewed items and sold them on eBay but grew so tired of it. Then I found World of Charity Stitching where I can cross stitch and sew for charity. What a wonderful fulfilling feeling to know that something I make brings such a smile to someone's face - maybe someone who has been forgotten. It's been worth every second!!!

  50. i don't have much of a sewing story actually - i have been sewing since i was quite little, i used to hand sew my own teddy bears hehe and now i have a whole master bedroom full of supplies! I loved to watch both my mum who sewed a lot of our clothing and my nanna who ran her own craft stall and that's where i got the sewing bug :)

    ReplyDelete
  51. I love her fabric too! I made a lovely dress for my little one with voile. I've never bought any flannel, so I hope I'm lucky to win this and see how beautiful it is!
A sewing story... My mum used to sew clothes for my sister and I, so we grew up with lots of scraps around to play with. I soon began to sew dresses for my dolls. I remember sewing something and resting my work on my lap, and found later that I had sewn the whole thing onto my skirt!I'd say I was probably 5 or 6...

  54. I have a "cute" sewing machine story too. I decided I wanted to learn to sew and my husband being the wonderful man he is traded an "oldish" treadle machine he had (that his late wife sewed on) for a new machine I could learn on. I used it a few times but was not very successful with it because I tried clothes (not quilts). I ended up putting that machine up for a while and trying quilting many years later. He was very understanding.

  56. What a compelling giveaway! I have long admired images of AMH voiles and flannels but have never seen them in real life.

Real life sewing story ... I'm kind of new at this and made my first solo quilt top this summer. I took a week of holidays to do it and I'm quite pleased with my somewhat off-kilter finished quilt top. That said, I struggled a lot with my low-end Singer and am about to start shopping for a fancy new machine. Suggestions most welcome.

  59. My sewing story is from my childhood. I remember wanting a cabbage patch & pound puppy so much, but not being able to afford them. I sat on the floor beside our dining room table while my mom made them for me using some knockoff supplies from the craft store. :) The happiness I remember feeling inspires me to sew for my boys.

  62. The first time I tried straight-line quilting, the back got folded and I sew the back to itself...and didn't realize it for more than one row...and had to unpick it all.

  63. sewing story: I gave a friend a spare room to sleep in while going through her divorce and in return, she gave me...wait for it....a long arm. I have quilted ONE quilt so far and I've had it for a year. I feel horribly guilty that I'm not using it all the time. I hope that I feel inspired one day to just get crazy!

When my mother in law handed down a sewing machine I knew it was time to get started.

And it should last, I don't use it very often!!!!!

  111. I, too, had a sewing machine kept in the box it came for about 3 years since I didn't figure out how to use it in my first try. I hated it. I took a sewing class and fell in love with their Janome machines and my DH got one of those for me. After getting my dream machine I gave my old one to a friend who had not trouble at all with it and sews for her family now. I've been happily sewing for my family for almost a year now.

  113. In my "younger days" my mom made me spend my summer's at the sewing machine. I was pumpimg out projects for the county and state fair. I hated it so much then! Now I just can't get enough sewing time. My mom chuckles everytime I show off a new project. I enjoy your blog!

  114. Well, one day I was sewing a dress, but i went on and I didn't leave space for the zipper...
Anyway, I wore the dress but in the night I couldn't take it off!
So I was kind of trapped until my sister helped me...
That was really funny, because I looked just like Winnie the Poo with a jar of honey covering my face :)

  119. I love that story about your husban buying to a sewing machine when you didn't even know you wanted one. My husband bought me a cordless iron, and I didn't really know it would make a difference in my sewing--and now I love it!

  120. I sewed once or twice as a child...and never had any interest in doing more. Then my Mom gave me an old Singer Scholastic machine. Now I can't imagine being without my sewing machine Recently I got brave and actually used a pattern and it worked!

  121. My sewing story...I failed my first quilting class!! I've never failed a class in my life, but the instructor and I just didn't hit it off and my sewing machine was an old one from a garage sale that died. The class became more of a stressor for me than a relaxant, so I finally quit and gave up. A few yrs later my soon-to-be hubby bought me a spiffy new Viking and a friend of mine taught me how to quilt. I LOVED it! I mostly quilt, but I do bags, a few clothes and other things. I still have a fear of sewing classes though!!

  125. I sew and quilt on the cheapest little Kenmore that Sears sells (actually, sold, since I bought it over 7 years ago). But it works pretty well. I'm hoping to upgrade to an embroidery machine soon!

  131. How fun! AMH fabrics are a true inspiration, most definitely. I guess the story I can share is that I first learned to sew when I was under ten years old. My grandmother taught me how to make scrunchies, and let me tell you, I had scrunchies in every color! I was such a nerd, but I owned it. ;) Thanks for sharing the giveaway!

  138. I use a Brother for my sewing. I bought it used on Craigslist from a woman who had probably never sewn in her life. She went to show me that it ran correctly and broke the needle while trying to do so. I just nodded my head and tried not to laugh!Luckily, my Brother has trucked through anything I have tried, from sewing cosmetic bags to blankies to dresses, and hasn't given me an issue at all. Best purchase I have ever made! :)

  140. I don't have any real sewing stories. I normally sew for my little nieces but now I have a baby girl of my own to sew for, so I'm making her a little calico bunny at the moment. Maybe one day I'll venture out and try some clothes for her!!
