A Birthday Beginning : :

Haila turns seven!!

Over the weekend we celebrated Haila's seventh Birthday with a bit of a "sewing theme" -- her request! It was beautiful!! My best friend Cynthia of Taylormade Baked Goods, made another confectionery masterpiece with button and stitchy details that was just as yummy as it was pretty! We topped it off with seven candles fastened into very old wooden spools from my collection, it was the sweetest cake!

Over the Summer Haila started sewing on my Janome, with my hovering and guidance, and began asking for a sewing machine of her very own. We decided on this Hello Kitty Janome and can't wait to break it in over Christmas vacation! Of course I'll be sure to share all of Haila's sewing projects right here!

Her reaction was priceless!!

Her excitement was so awesome!!

Haila & her Janome!

Yup, she's  in love!!

Sewing Machine Hugs!

You can imagine how excited and proud I am to see her so enthusiastic about sewing! I'm a self-taught sewist myself. Come late March it will be four years since I started & fell completely in love with sewing, and look what's it's become for me! I've heard so many wonderful stories over the years from people who've been lucky enough to sew with their mothers and grandmothers. Many who learned so very young, sewing on the laps of their loved ones, observing their skills, absorbing the beautiful tradition. Yesterday was the beginning of that for my family, a birthday that I will always treasure, and I can't wait to see the magic that's going to happen!

  12. She will treasure this and all the memories she will start making. I started teaching my 8 and 9 year old grandchildren to sew on my sewing machine this summer when my husband was well. We will resume their lessons again this summer again. I have a small Janome that I was teaching them on and they both did well. My grand daughter was making a 4 patch. Have fun with this.

  31. What a great birthday present. I love her reaction. I'm so excited for you that you get to teach your daughter how to sew. My daughter was never interested, but I can't complain because it took me 37 years to be interested. There wasn't a day growing up that there wasn't some sort of craft project in my mother's hands. Needless to say, she is ecstatic now that I've taken up quilting. I enjoy your posts and love that you include your family. I think we have about 5 of those beanies your husband is wearing. It's staple piece of clothing where we live. Oh and you are teaching me as well. I'm almost done with my first quilt as you go quilt. Thank you for the inspiration and for keeping me interested when I get bored.

  33. What a great Birthday...My 8 year old granddaughter has asked Santa for a sewing machine so her mother got her one and I put together a sewing basket full of goodies and added a couple of different precuts for her. I am trying to find beginner things for her to sew. Do you recommend any books or patterns for her to start with?

  34. This whole post is so beautiful and sweet. The part where you started sewing four years ago, though - nearly caused me to pass out. I cannot believe your skill, talent, inspiration, productivity, daring, innovation.... Wow.

And so much thanks for sharing ti all, too!

  36. I've just very recently found your blog through a friend and have been enjoying browsing through your lovely quilts. I hadn't realised you'd only started sewing so recently - amazing! I'm not normally a great 'commenter' (although I'm getting better since I started blogging myself and realised how lovely it is to get comments!), but I have to comment today because I also have a little girl who's a very similar age and has also just started to become interested in sewing. Her 7th birthday was literally just a couple of weeks ago and I gave her some fabric and a sewing kit. I'd got her an old hand sewing machine a month or so ago, if she sees your little girl's machine she will have serious sewing machine envy! Anyway, if your daughter would ever like an online sewing penpal then give a shout, I'm sure mine would love that. And we'll be following any projects your little one tackles with lots of interest. I've blogged about my little one's 2nd make just today if you fancy having a look - http://wonkypatchwork.blogspot.co.uk/2013/12/christmas-tree-mini-quilt.html
And great cake too by the way!

  37. What a lucky girl! My eldest is 7 and I've only just reached the stage where I am about to introduce her and my other children (4 and 5 yrs old) to the sewing machine. We are about to begin our Summer school holidays here and I have told them that they can make something on the sewing machine after Christmas. They are all very excited. I have a feeling that, if they be good boys and girls, in a couple of years Santa might bring them a sewing machine.

  39. Great birthday gift. I started sewing when I was in Girl Scouts in the '60's but never taught my daughter to sew. On her 24th birthday I gave here a Brother sewing machine and she loved it. Let me tell you how hard it is to tell someone how to thread a needle or follow a pattern over the phone! Now she is working on her own quilts. Your daughter is so lucky and the cake was beautiful.

I can just imagine how excited you were. My mother taught me to sew as well. I'm sure you have many beautiful memories in front of you. Please pass on birthday wishes to Haila for me.
