It's week four and new block release day of the Sewcial Bee Sampler sew-along Sharon Holland and I are co-hosting now through early August! A quick reminder that it's never too late to jump in, so feel free to join us at anytime! Keep posting to Instagram with #SewcialBeeSampler and feel free to tag @sharonhollanddesigns and myself @maureencracknell when you post anything SBS so we can both see and easily keep track of all your wonderful bee posts. We'll continue to try our best to visit with all who join the sew along. We're having so much fun!

Today's free download is for block #4 Crow's Nest! I'll be sure to add this new pattern to my Sewcial Bee Sampler Page, so those of you just discovering our bee can find everything you need to begin right in one place!

The Sewcial Bee Sampler Block No. 4: Crow's Nest

This pretty block reminds me of the popular Churn Dash block and is doable for even the newbie quilter! The materials and directions suggest choosing one A and one B fabric, but I decided to go more scrappy and included four different prints. I chose one of my Nightfall owls to be the focal patch in the center with a combination of pretty Nightfall and Garden Dreamer prints for the remainder of the block piecing. I really love how it turned out!

Once again my partner Sharon is sharing super helpful, extra step by step images on her blog today, in addition to the pattern information illustrated and written in the download material! Over the weekend Sharon also wrote a helpful blog post on HST and deciphering SBS blocks that includes this handy SBS Extras PDF full of additional patchwork piecing information. She's the best!

I still plan to make TWO Sewcial Bee Sampler quilts, but have gotten a little behind this past week from being both sick and super busy working on my new studio! Eek! I'm relocating from the studio space I've had here at home since we moved in a few years ago, to a space right downtown on main street in our little town. It's been a lot of work getting it move-in ready, we're almost there, and once we are I plan to share lots of photos!

I hope to play catch-up with my SBS blocks over the next few days and I can't wait to see the Crow's Nest blocks you'll make this week! Don't forget to visit Sharon's blog to see her beautiful Bountiful version and to stop back for this week's Sewcial Bee Giveaway Friday with our sponsor the Fat Quarter Shop!

Happy SBS sewing!  ♡ Maureen

  1. Oh, I love your version of Crow's Nest, Maureen! I had my fingers crossed, hoping that when you shared a glimpse of your fabric choices for this block, that you would fussy cut an owl for the center. It is perfect!
