Nordika Sewing : :

In these busy Summer days, when there is so much going on, there's just so little time for sewing. Which is perfectly fine most days since instead I'm at the pool, bike riding, and soaking up these sunny Summer days with my most favorite people. But, as you know I do love sewing, and I'm really starting to miss those long sewing sessions. When I do find some time, because of all my orders and other projects due, I feel as if there's less and less production and more just me running around in circles. There are alot of things piling up around here! So, you might think the last thing I need is another project, but nope! it was actually the answer -- some good, fun, selfish sewing is just what I'm in need of!!

Making Nordika Scraps

On Friday a sweet bundle of Nordika arrived from my friends at Art Gallery Fabrics! It's the brand new collection by the wonderfully, talented Jeni Baker, available in stores next month. I'm so completely in love with this entire collection. As is my girl, who begged for these fabrics to become a new quilt for her!!

Nordika + Pures

I knew right away that I wanted to do something separating the darker volumes from the light.

Finding Volume

As well as something scrappy and zig-zaggy, beginning with my very favorite print first!

Beginning with my very favorite!

Zig Zaggy  Nodika Plans

Coming together

The energy and excitement that comes with starting something new, with beautiful fabrics, and all sorts of fun possibilities is just what I desperately needed to regain some focus. This project will be the treat that's waiting for me to work on here and there after I finish up all those "must do's!"

Nordika Confetti

So, how about you? Are you struggling to find Summer sewing time, too? I'm wondering how many of you, like me, thrive on the excitement that comes from stashing a new gorgeous stack of fabric or from starting something new?

Wishing you a little fun, Summer sewing this week, too!  Maureen

  1. I love that fabric! I just finished a quilt that I was donating, and it felt good to get in my sewing room yesterday and sew whatever I wanted to sew, just playing with scraps. Enjoy!

    1. Thank you! I'm sure it has a name and I actually meant to ask if anyone knew what this block was called in my post? I'm calling it a zig zaggy quilt for now and thought of sharing the how-to eventually, since the stack and whack cutting and strip piecing makes for some super quick and easy block making! :)

  4. I've stashed way too much fabric! I need to get my fingers in gear and plug that sewing machine back in so I can get ready for fall birthdays and Christmas gifts! But I could always use some more fabric! I'm guilty of keeping a special piece or two that is just too gorgeous to cut! lol

  5. I have been goofing off all week, our anniversary vacation week. Lots of paddling, so now I am ready to relax and start sewing again. I love starting new projects, I need to finish things though;)

I received my prize package and the fabric is beautiful, will post about it tonight. I think it will make a sweet little girl girl or maybe something modern for my daughter, love to plan a quilt around the fabric.

    1. Thank you! Jeni definitely nailed the Scandinavian vibe she was going for with this collection with these great florals! I would love a dress made in this fabric, too!!

    1. I'm not sure, I'll have to google that?! I did sketch out this plan prior to cutting, so I could have a quick plan for a zig zag block. I'm sure it has a name and I actually meant to ask if anyone knew what this block was called in my post? I'm calling it a zig zaggy quilt for now and thought of sharing the how-to eventually, since the stack and whack cutting and strip piecing makes for some super quick and easy block making! I'm super motivated to get this one done quick! Oh, and I'm qayg, too!! :)

    2. It's not the rail fence, but it is a bit similar? I think I'm going to put together a little how-to or maybe a full tutorial for this quilt eventually. It won't be completely finished until I can buy the yardage I'll need to finish it, but I have my recent Alphabet quilt pattern to finish first anyways! :)

Does anyone know if this pattern already has a name?

  9. I think the "must dos" on my sewing list are kind of a drag - so it's essential to do something different now and then. I was going to plow through 2 major projects just to get them done when a great opportunity came up that was due very quickly. I was a bit disappointed to change my plans to finish the longstanding WIPs- but now I know I will return to them refreshed.

  10. I don't do too many "must do" sewing projects, just a commission now and then. But even then, I feel like I get stalled on those and start something else. I'm most productive when I start a project and when I can see the finish line. I lag in the middle, but a jump start by starting something new or finishing something small makes me want to get that lagging project finished faster.

I'm envious of people that can start and finish things before starting something else, but I would never get anything done if I put that rule on myself.

  11. I'm findig it incredibly dificult to find sewing time. It is not that I don't have enough projects...they are lagging dreadfully behind...I just have so many other things I want to do the most important of which is taking long walks with my hubby on the beach for exercise! Plus work gets a bit more stressful with the summer programs we provie for kids that I am often too tired to think about anything when I get home.

  12. I'm finding it a little hard to juggle sewing & crafting time with the sudden spurts of growth in our yard and house spaces! So it's a toss up between weed eating and digging and planting or sewing (sewing is sooooo much neater!)

As far as my new projects for sewing I need to make a few more miniature quilts.

For real human sized quilts I must continue hoarding some fabric to make a string quilt (fall is coming!)That's the downside to miniature quilting--when you buy fabric or use fabric the scraps you have left over won't work for a "regular" sized quilt project!

Although the larger quilts (non miniature are always a challenge for me--they need so much more patience!)

  13. Can I ever relate to lack of sewing time. My son is home for the summer for the first time in two years (he's out of state at seminary) and my nephew is living with us until he gets married in August. While they don't care if I sew, I'd rather cook and bake for them, play games, and visit. I did sit down yesterday and cut out 100 2.5" squares and turned it into a pillow top for my sister-in-law's birthday. Now I want one!

  15. Selfish time is over for me for a long while :) Especially because Miss Nadia doesn't nap for more than 40 minutes a pop. But that's ok - we'll get there eventually! I'll just have to live vicariously through the sewing blogs I follow for now! Can't wait to see how your quilt progresses!

  16. Summer is very busy around the farm which is bad because if I don't have time to sew, then i shop , usually for fabric!
I love Nordika. The tulip print is my favorite and thanks for the B&W photo above!

  22. I can't wait for this collection to hit the stores and I think this pattern you're creating is the perfect way to showcase this collection! Will you be doing a tutorial?

  24. Beautiful Fabrics, but I wanna know what you are going to do with all of those scrap strips in the bucket! I save these too but don't know what I'll do with them! Ideas????

  25. I really love this new fabric line. It is so fun looking. The pattern is just great. I would love to make a quilt like that. Since I am a newer quilter, I have been choosing pretty simple patterns, but I think I can graduate up to trying this one. Thank you for sharing with us! I am excited!! I think your daughter is going to be so happy with her new quilt.

  26. Gorgeous fabric. And what a great pattern to use for it - something simple and easy to sew that has a lot of punch to it. You always seem to find a pattern that shows off the fabric. Great job!

  27. I like your idea to start a fun project to reward yourself with when the "must dos" are done. I have 3 "must dos" with deadlines, but I think I'm going to start working on a quilt for my own bed. I've been stashing away low volume fabric for months now little by little. Tomorrow I start cutting, assuming of course I have some progress on one of those "must dos". Might be just what I need too :)

  28. Up here in Canada school doesn't end until Friday - but I'm excited/dreading the "unorganized" days that come with the holidays. Glad to know I'm not the only one - now off to make teacher gifts! ~Sherri sherri@threadridinghood.com
