A Quilt Top Finish : :

Well, I finished my Quilt As You Go quilt top yesterday! It took hours for me to finish it up and was just what I needed to spend yesterday doing. Listening to nothing but the hum of my machine as I added all my simple, straight-line quilting stitches gave me that same sense of comfort and calmness that I had only ever found through knitting before. It was, well...nice. And has me feeling this morning like this may just be the year of the quilt for me, although I'm pretty certain I declared that last year? I guess we'll see!

Rolled up and ready to be finished!

I added a large quilted border of Bari J.'s LillyBelle print, Garden Rocket in Turquoise. I had stashed 4 yds of it, and now all I have left are a few tiny scraps and just one fat quarter!

Quilt Top -- Done!

Adding all that LillyBelle added such a softness to this quilt and took the sweet, feminine vibe of my improv blocks off the charts! I think my husband's reaction was, "Wow, that's really girly!" My response was, "Yup, and it's just for me...I think?" assuring him that it wouldn't be living on our bed!

Quilted LillyBelle

Although this morning as I looked back through the photo album I have for this quilt, I noticed that Lily sure seems to like it, too!

Lily

Someone's decided this quilt is hers!

Eww, she actually looks mean in that last photo, yikes! Good thing I don't mind sharing.

Well, I've decided to try out some 505 Spray Adhesive for the first time for quilt basting. Reading over Ashley's of Film In The Fridge Tutorial convinced me that this is worth a try. It should be here any day and in the meantime I just need to decide on a backing -- this Folsky Flannel or this Indie print? I have lots of both and I'll need it! This finished quilt top measures 68" x 72"! So, what do you think? I actually changed my mind and will be finishing it in this LillyBelle print! But more importantly....

Have you tried 505? Any tips or reviews you could share here would be oh, so helpful!!

Thanks in advance! Maureen

    1. That's definitely what I'm leaning towards! The color scheme and coziness of that flannel seems more suiting, but I just love that yellow Indie print so much! Maybe my next quilt project should be designed around it?! :)

  2. Oh, I just love this quilt ~ so soft and full of color. Do you have a tutorial for the quilt as you go? I think I need to give it a try.
My kitties like to sit on anything fabric related. Found my Isybelle on some
2 1/2" squares I'd cut for a swap ~ messed them all up ~ silly girl.

    1. Thanks Elsa! It really is so soft, which was one of the concerns using this method of quilting, that folks asked about in the comments of the tutorial (found here -- http://maureencracknellhandmade.blogspot.com/2013/01/a-quilt-top-finish.html). I'm seriously going to have a difficult time quilting any other way than this one, I just love it!

  3. I like the folksy flannel too. I have spray basted. For many years it was my preferred method of basting. I will say I prefer pin basting now simply because a FMQ most of my stuff and the pins help me track where I've been and where I need to go. The last quilt I spray basted and FMQ'd I missed a bunch of sections on and had to go back and do them. But I still love it for smaller things like wall hangings and table toppers and runners. The trick is to go light. If you can see it you have too much. Also let the quilt sit for a few hours before sewing to let the adhesive dry so it doesn't gum up your needle. It still will a tiny bit, but it would be much worse if you quilted immediately after spray basting.

  4. Aw Lily is just beautiful :) as is your quilt of course! I've not used 505 myself, as I haven't yet reached the point of quilting my first quilt yet, but everyone I know that quilts swears by it!

  5. I love 505 and use it for all my basting. It doesn't smell and is really easy to reposition, but at the same time holds very well. For smallish quilts I baste on my design wall rather than the floor, which makes it really easy. I'm sure you will like using it!

  6. Flannel for sure !

The quilt looks absolutely gorgeous and the border is the perfect addition to it !

  7. I like the soft glow of that indie print but the flannel would feel cozy!
    tough choice!

I've never used the spray and don't plan to. I am leary of fumes... there's enough bad stuff one breathes in a day I don't want to add to it.
    I've heard it's great though...

    1. Thanks for pointing that out! I'm concerned about the fumes, too? I'm definitely planning to try it out on our deck with a drop cloth down. I'm going to read up on that now actually! Thanks again!!

  9. Such a great fabric combo! I'd go with the folksy flannel, it's just so snuggly. No advice on the spray, though, since I'm a longarmer and have asthma, so sprays are out.

    1. Thanks Chelsea! I actually changed my mind on the backing fabric all together and just ordered 4 yards of a different LillyBelle print! :) Art Gallery Fabrics just feel so lovely quilted and with the spring/summer color scheme of this quilt, I couldn't convince myself that flannel would be right!

  10. Beautiful quilt and kitty! My kitty is in my sewing room with me all day trying to interrupt projects, lol! I haven't made a quilt yet but need to withh all my scraps. I use the basting spray to hold down my paper patterns...just have to be verrrry light with it. My cutting is much more accurate when I use it and I only need a couple pins to hold the layers together.

  11. I always spray baste and the fumes haven't got me yet ;-) it's really quick and easy, I barely have the patience to put in safety pins to mark the middle. I follow a tutorial which I can link to if you like?

    1. I always follow this one http://chasingcottons.blogspot.co.uk/2011/06/spray-basting-tutorial-with-kristie.html

it's for whole top basting but I'm sure you could adapt it to just add your back for your QAYG piece. Works great for me every time.

  12. Well I'm in love with it either way! I dont use the basting sprays, but each time I'm at the fabric store or Michaels', I pick it up, read it and put it back down; too unsure of it. Chicken me!

    1. I'm actually starting to chicken out, I think? These fumes have me worried! I am so sensitive to smells, and with my skin issues, I worry that it might be a bad idea, hmn???
Be sure to check out the conversation happening on my facebook, too, with VERY mixed reviews. Several people say that it is very toxic, don't do it and others seem to LOVE it?!

  13. I've used the 505 before, on two baby quilts and it's been great! About to put a backing on a double bed one and I'm not so sure though, will be interested to see how you do.

  14. I think I'm the only person in Texas who has bad luck with 505. I thought it was my can at first (since everyone else loves it) so I ordered two more cans. I still prefer the Original Spray Basting Spray (with a pink label). I think it holds better. I think 505 would be okay for smaller projects and I will use the rest of my two cans. I hope you have great luck with it. Someone commented to wait after you spray. I do this - overnight or at least several hours. The quilt is gorgeous!

    1. I wish I would have taken some photos while I worked on the border. I simply quilted long pieces of LillyBelle that I pin basted to batting and then added them the same way I joined the blocks in my tutorial. I am still deciding on how exactly I want to add the backing -- I'm excited, too!

  17. That quilt is so, so gorgeous! I usually shy away from super girly prints but you really made me love this one! As far as the 505 goes - I'm a HUGE fan. Huge. It's nontoxic, which is great, and it works really well. I remember my LQS owner telling a story about how the rep sprays it in his mouth at market (ew)to show that it's safe. It works wonderfully and I've never had any issues with it gumming up my machine/needle. I usually let it sit for about 30 minutes before quilting. Give it a try - I bet you'll love it. :)

  22. Your finished quilt is really gorgeous, and the model is pretty cute too! I am a 505 convert, and NEVER want to pin again! However, the quilt I am doing now has a voile backing, and I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be happy with spray basting! So it's down on my hands and knees for this one, and then back to the 505! Love the stuff!

  23. I love this quilt! It's beautiful, Maureen.

As to 505--- I have never used anything else. I have since tried two other brands (found at JoAnns) and they just weren't the same. So I will say that while the cost can be higher for the 505, it is totally worth it. I, too, found it on Film in the Fridge. Definitely follow her advice on how to. Also, I spray in my basement family room, which is a larger open space, but still I've only found ventilation an issue when I sprayed a queen-size quilt. And even then, I basted both layers immediately, without taking a break in between to let the room air out. Ultimately, I love it. I honestly wouldn't have tried quilting if I had to pin. I am terrible about pinning. lol

  24. Love that quilt. It is girly, but in such a modern way that it's not too "sweet" if you know what I mean. I've always heard quilt as you go is nice especially for those of us on domestic machines, but I have yet to tackle it. I'm too chicken!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Oh, my. That is truly one of the prettiest things I've ever seen. I'll vote that it was worth it to use the fabric when it turned out looking like that! You have such an incredible eye for color and design. I'll admit that I'm jealous. All I can really do is copy everyone else. Yours is a gift, lady.

  26. Love the quilt it looks amazing! I like 505 spray it works great. I just use it outside. Nothing but spray and go!

    ReplyDelete
  27. There are tons of folks who swear by 505. I've never used that brand. I've used another brand. One thing about the aerosol basting sprays is to be aware that there may be some overspray (meaning some of it may go beyond where you intend it to be sprayed.). Be mindful of that.

Lilybelle is a favorite fabric line for me. I made a quilt for my niece from that. Almost kept it. LOL!

  29. Oh you are so fighting that cat for the quilt! I use 505 all the time, and I love it, even if it does mean mopping the kitchen floor twice in one day ;o)

  30. I've used 505 on two quilts. It worked brilliantly on my son's bed quilt using wool batting. Don't use it if you're using a wool blanket instead of batting, too much weight for it to cope. I do still use the odd safety pin when spray basting, especially on the edges to give extra support. It's probably not necessary. I spray outside on the lawn to avoid the fumes; I won't spray inside.

    ReplyDelete
  31. that is one gorgeous quilt! I tried a basting spray once, not sure I liked it and haven't tried it since, mainly because it involves putting it outside and it seemed like extra work. When I basted I still used pins because the layers still shifted in the machine. It is definitely something I need to learn about this year!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Gorgeous quilt!
I love 505 - I don't think I'd still be quilting without it! I started out pin basting and no matter how close I put my pins and how carefully I smoothed the layers I always had puckers on the back. After about 9 months I was getting so frustrated that I nearly gave up. Then I read about 505 on a blog (can't remember which one) and decided to give it a go. It was great, so much quicker and not a pucker in sight.
There is a slight smell but it dissipates in minutes and although I have sensitive skin I've never had any problems. I love how easy it is to lift and reposition the layers if you get a wrinkle and the hold is good for months - I basted an 82" square quilt in May last year and then it sat folded up until I got round to quilting it in November.

Overspray is an issue though, I baste on my dining room floor and the first time I didn't clean up thoroughly enough and ended up with a residue which collected dirt and took some serious scrubbing to shift. Now I baste smaller items on top of an old sheet and after basting larger items I mop immediately after basting and I've had no more problems. Obviously I'm a fan and a bit biased but I hope that helps.

  33. Great quilt! The photos of Lily are the cutest. I have not tried 505, but I've heard that it is the best of the spray basting products.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Do not get the spray anywhere important other than your quilt! Some got sprayed onto my cutting board, and I have a 'linted' patch, that doesn't come clean! I do not want to scrub my board. I hasten to say, I was not the guilty party. It was done while I was out at work!

  35. 1st of all I gotta say love love love the quilt. Awesome color combination. As for 505 spray I have useing ti about 4 years now for machine embroidery on my stablaizer in my hoops. There is overspray which can make your cutting table look nasty. and gunk your machine embroidery hoops up...I use a towel under mine when spraying so I can just toss the towel in teh laundry after I use it. SPray lightley. Don't go crazy with it. Also the aresol can be irritatieng to my asthma and breathing If I am spraying a bit. WHat I usally do Is spray on the very opposite side of the room than where I am gonna be working at so I am not breathign those fumesin directly. But I do prefer the 505 over the sulk spray. I usally get mine from Sew For less. They usually have abotu the best price that I have seen for it.

    1. Thanks Tammy! I actually ordered mine online from Joann Fabrics and used my 40% or 50% off coupon. I think the large can size with shipping was just under $14, so not a huge investment in case the fumes are freaking me out or I just don't like it! It actually came later today, so now I am waiting on that backing fabric I decided to order today! ;)

  36. Gorgeous, Maureen! I would want to keep that quilt all to myself, too :) And I love the calm that quilting can bring, like you're doing just the right thing at that moment.
I love 505, and I use it on most of my quilts-- I find it holds really well and makes things so fast and easy! One small holdup, though-- it doesn't seem to work on voile! For some reason it just doesn't stick, so when making a voile quilt you still need to use pins!

    ReplyDelete
  37. I hate pinning a quilt to baste so was really excited to try the 505. I've used it for probably 4 quilts now from wall hanging size to twin and it worked well for all. No stink, easy to fix positioning but holds really well even if you don't get to it the same day. Love it. Love the new quilt too.

  38. Beautiful! and your cat is just precious!

I love spray basting. And don't worry about over-spray or getting it on stuff too much. I did that a few times and isopropyl alcohol takes it right off. May need to use a soft toothbrush dipped in alcohol. Really, it's not a big deal. I wrote a post about it when I could find help on the internet about over-spray. :D

  41. I use Tailor's brand..from Joann's. $12 a can and I use my 50/60% off coupon. I have found it isn't just spray and stick. I have found you do need to organize yourself with it. I find that starting in the middle of the quilt and working outward instead of from one end to the other does best for me. Make sure that middle is secure and the rest falls in place easily. I still use 1,1/2" safety pins to hold while FMQ'ing but those are more for just holding the seams in place and straight. I love it!

Concerning the 505 I use it for years and just couldn't do without ! 58. I want a quilt just like this one, Maureen...stunning! As for 505...love the stuff. I have no patience for pin-basting unless it's small, so spray basting is a must for me. My only tip is to take your time to make sure everything is smooth. Otherwise there's really nothing to it. I do my spraying in our laundry room, which has a crummy old linolium floor so I don't care about the overspray and such. Can't wait to see how it goes!
