Simple Color Totes : :

Since sharing my Sewing Room Before post, I have been thinking a lot about simple storage solutions.
In my current space, I have a pretty large closet for how small my room is, which holds all my fabric and felt scraps, my large stack of felt sheets, and boxes of vintage notions. The truth is, it's usually a complete mess! I also have a hallway that continues past my room that leads only to the attic, where you can almost always find a pile of new pillow forms and batting. With my new room being so open, with no closets or hidden hallways, having a plan for the items that I'm used to tucking away is something I really want to figure out now.

First on my list -- fabric scrap storage!

Simply Color Totes

After playing around with a few prints from my Simply Color Layer Cake for my Quilted Fox Pillow, I was inspired to use one of the prints, in the eight different colorways included in the Layer Cake, to help me sort my scraps by color.

I've used this method of fabric scrap separating in the past with mason jars, but now that I sew everyday... Well, I'm sure you can imagine how many scraps I acquire throughout my days. It's a little crazy! And the fabric hoarder, pinner, & scrap-happy project enthusiast in me, has a really hard time letting go of even the littlest fabric bit.

Sraps by Color

In case you're wondering, I did not use a specific pattern or tutorial for making these totes. I just used what I know from making my lined tote bags, adapting them to be boxier with little side handles. I actually forgot to write down what I was doing when I made my first one. I did remember with my second, and now I think they will come together much easier and faster. I really do want them to all be the same. These first two are a little off in size, but you can see that they make a pretty generous landing spot for fabric scraps.

I just have six more to go, in these great Simply Color - colors... And, then I'll have to take a look at what other fabric scrap tote colors I'll need, and at what prints in my stash will work best for finishing the job. I have to say, these 10" layer cake squares worked perfectly for this project!

My plan is to have them lined up along the bottom of a shelf, possibly my new shelf if they'll fit? I probably should have measured that first, hmn? It's a good thing I also like the idea of having them hanging around?! What do you think??

I'm so excited to be able to share all these little projects while we wait to move. The feedback you all left me on my last post, and all the sweet comments congratulating us, has been so helpful and has meant so much! THANK YOU!!

Alright, time to make some scraps!! Maureen

  7. I made something something similar to your totes but not color coordinated with my fabrics ~ very clever of you to do it that way and much easier to find what color scrap you're looking for.

  9. I like the idea of sorting them into colors. I usually just store them all in a drawer but it makes it challenging if you are looking for a particular color!

  24. What a great idea. Would it be possible to put a bookcase or two in part of the doorway to your new room for storage and then display a quilt on the backside/ Just a thought.

    1. That's a really great idea! Right now, I'm actually keeping an eye out for a unique old door that might fit that opening. It's rather narrow and I definitely want something really special! Love the idea of a quilt hanging!!

  25. Such a fun idea! Better than the jars first off as you can add scraps to them without the opening of the jar! The prints are great. I like the hanging idea =D

  28. This is a fabulous idea Maureen. It got me thinking about my own situation. I wonder if I took your concept, but instead of hanging them, I could put them into a "cubby" shelf unit? For example from Ikea, you can get the 3 x 3 (or whatever configuration you like) cubby shelves. By being square, they would utilize the maximum space in the cubby, and act sort of like a removable drawer. I am thinking I don't have enough wall space to hang all the colors, so if I slid them into a shelf unit, it would work. You could even do this with a bookcase if you already had one. I love your idea of using the fabric colors to make the containers - Brilliant! It keeps things looking neat and concealed at the same time.

I might suggest that you go online to look at all the Ikea options. They have wonderful storage ideas that might make your open room look organized. I've seen were they use a metal band with hooks, to hang round plastic containers for odds and ends. I bet you could hang your round fabric containers from them and get them up and on the wall? Oh gosh, all these ideas floating through my head! ahhahahaha

    1. Well, I am planning for it, but of course forgot to buy some interfacing today when I traveled to the nearest JoAnn (50 miles away). I have been using some large sheets of felt and a layer of batting to get the thickness and sturdiness I need for these to sit upright, etc... It will be a couple of weeks before I'm ready to share a how-to. :)

  35. Lovely bags! I am reading Sunday Morning Quilts, and thinking about doing bags for mt scraps too, but don't want to use them up making the bags! I bet one could even use colored paper collage, just to get the color idea across....

  37. Ooh, pretty! A much better idea than just shoving scraps into ziploc bags, as I have been doing!
