Last night I finally changed that broken needle and got back to it! My finger is still sore, my pride -- possibly a little sorer! But when there's so much sewing to be done, it's best to just dive right back in, with projects that are both simple and familiar.
Remember that Summerlove Spring Bird Pillow? I made another and it was just a quick and rewarding as that first one. I do love simple sewing projects!
Next, I started another Charlotte Apron Dress for my little girl. My only rule was wanting to use some of my new Robert Kaufman Essex Linen as the main dress fabric, and then I let her choose the rest. She did amazing!! I thought she would go in a completely different direction, so she really showed me! First choosing two of my Yuwa fabrics that she has loved since the day they arrived here, then two coordinating Pure Element Solids, and finally the soft pink flannel. She did so, so good!!
Since this was my second go at this dress pattern, I wanted to have a little fun by adding in a few extra little somethings along the way. First, I added a sweet little stitch to the apron ruffle detail with some of my Auriful Lana Wool thread in this pretty coral color.
and then I tried another new stitch on my Janome -- This great little loop-dee-loop stitch, I love it!
Last night I finished up the skirt, but before I move on to the bodice today I have birthday crowns to make!!

Oh Maureen; I must have missed a post..did you stick the machine needle through your finger????
ReplyDeleteHope it feels better. When I break a needle; I feel a bit intimidated to go back at it. I am so afraid of breaking my machine..this in during FMQ practic...I guess I don't get enough practice. and am nervous each time I do sit down to it. Love those little pillows
I did! But I am fine and feeling very lucky it healed up so quickly!! It is definitely scary to sew again right after it happens, it was good to take a few days to start missing it first! ;)

ReplyDeleteI am smitten with these pillows! They are so so lovely and sweet. I need something like this for my daughter's room. I absolutely love the birds. And seeing the frills and the loopy stitches makes me want a bird pillow with those embellishments!!

Meg, These pillows are for an upcoming issue of Simply Handmade Magazine. They plan to share the full how-to, but in the Fall I wouldn't mind making a bunch to offer in my shop. They are up there with my most favorite pillow design!

Hooray for hopping back on the saddle...and what an amazing pillow! I'm so jealous - I may try to tackle a little birdie myself soon. Hmmm, wheels are turning! I'm desperately trying to finish up a table runner my sister asked me to make for her classroom para-professional. It just needs binding! Then two swaps and I'm D.O.N.E for the month. We are moving in a couple of weeks and I cannot believe how fast time has gone!

ReplyDeleteI bent a good eighth inch of a needle on Sunday night working on a wristlet pouch because I forgot to change the foot on my machine. Oops! Good thing it was about time to change the needle anyway :)
ReplyDeleteToday we are working on staying cool in our house! No air conditioning + 90 degree weather can make for some cranky people!
I'm making my first piece of clothing. It's a little top for my niece and it's causing me no end of frustration (I'm relatively new to sewing, so I still have a lot to learn), but I'm persevering and doing ther best I can :)

It's great you got back to the sewing machine already-- those injuries can be scary! That is such a great pillow! I love the little birdie details, especially the legs! What sort of stitch do you use for those? They look so perfect!
ReplyDeleteI've been trying to tie up loose ends on a few projects and quilts, and I need to make my next round of bee blocks for our do. Good Stitches bee! I'm excited to make those, and I hope to finish up some older projects so I can start some new :)
It's actually an applique stitch on my Janome, but I also have it on my Viking as a satin stitch. It's hard to get it just right, but it's nice to use for little things like these birdie feet! :)

ReplyDeleteTake care of your finger - that is all kinds of ouch. It'll probably be sore for a while but if it gets worse, make sure it's not infected. Fingers have a way of being extremely troublesome that way.
Oh, that pillow is darling! Would love to learn how to make one like it. Your daughter did great and I think your special stitches give it that something extra.

ReplyDeleteWow! Great job with the satin stitch on those birdie legs, that can't be easy! Love your loopy stitch, I need to check out my machine and see what kind of special stitches it has. I am working like mad trying to get my new wave quilt quilted. I am officially 1/2 of the way done with it. Not bad, when each wave takes 1-1.5 hours to quilt and I only get 2 hours of quilty time a day. I need to finish this so I can get my boys' quilts basted and quilted. I so need a finish right now! I haven't had one since March!
