A Patchwork Letter Baby Quilt : :

I finished up my simple patchwork baby quilt for my new nephew Liam late last Thursday. This was such a quick and easy blanket to make, I can't wait to have a reason to make another!

Liam's Mama was thrilled, however I'm still waiting on his reaction! This one really likes his sleep! He is such a sweet boy.

Now this blanket is not perfect, I know, but I love the bright colors and how soft and cozy it is. Just as a good baby quilt should be! I quickly pieced together 4" squares of chartreusey-yellow-greens, aquas, black & whites, and red-orange fabrics from my fabric stash. One of my favorite color combinations!

I did add a layer of batting in between the pieced front and red & white chevron back. For that I simply basted the finished front to a piece of batting slightly larger than the quit top and stitched in the ditch (in each square seam) traveling down the quilt. Since my patchwork isn't perfectly lined up, with this method I didn't have to worry about the quilting showing off that fact, since you can't really see those quilting lines. I added the backing, sewing together my pieces right sides facing, left an opening for turning it out, and then I added one final stitch all the way around the very outer edge. Easy!

The offset "L" is my very favorite part! To add the letter I used Heatbond lite, ironing it on, and then stitching around it with black thread. So many of you have been sending me emails on how I applique, it really is that simple!

In case you are wondering about the fabrics that make up this baby boy quilt, they include some oldies from my stash and also some recent purchases like this Fruit Punch Organic Bundle, several colors from this QuiltCon Bundle, this Echo print, this Maya print, and this Dumb Dot in Citron. I love these color for a baby boy!

How about you, what are you working on these days? Have you finished anything recently??

  2. The quilt is darling. I finally broke into the fat quarter bundle I won from you to make a pillowcase dress. It was hard to do, but the end result was worth it. :)

  6. The quilt is almost as cute as that little baby. I am currently making three sundresses for a customer. My first time making clothing for someone who is paying me. And I am piecing a wonky block quilt out of batiks that is turning out awesome. One problem with batiks is if you think you need a particular one, buy all that you think you will need because you won't find it again. I was trying to find one I got a year ago but no luck. I have had to mix and match with another that is pretty close but different. It still looks good I think.

  7. I love it when one of the bloggers I admire posts something that is not "perfect." It makes all my imperfect quilts seem OKAY, no, better than OKAY! thanks, Maureen! I LOVE that little baby quilt, it's wonderful!

  8. I love your patchwork here...the colors are perfect for a boy:) Actually I sewed my first dress on Saturday...at a sewing bee. We made dresses for orphans in Africa! I sat at my machine for like 6 hours straight but it felt amazing to be doing so for such a good cause. We had around 76 dresses by the day's end!

I've been making binding for my quilts...will have 3 completed once I sew down the back of the binding. =D

  15. Ohhh...turned out gorgeous! Love the L! I always do the girls first initial on the back of my quilts in the offset corner - love it everytime!

I'm having a love/hate relationship with my zigzag quilt at the moment. The size is bothering me and now I'm debating about adding a border or 2 and then binding to add some width and length. But then I get mad because I love it as is and think the border would not suit the zig zag but I'm wishing it was bigger. What to do...what to do...lol.

  20. Your baby quilt is absolutely adorable. I like the way you used some of your scraps & stayed away from the traditional baby colors. I am working on a "big girl" quilt for my granddaughter who will turn 4 next month. I am using a charm pack & jelly roll that matches the charm pack.

  21. The fabric you chose for the initial is inspired! I love how it makes it look coloured in with scribbles! I DID finish something today - a big-girl quilt for my big girl. Very happy to have it finished!

  22. Hi Maureen,
My daughter-in-law saw this quilt and feel in love with it.
She is expecting her second baby in November, and asked if I could make
this quilt for her. She choose Moda " Oh Deer ". The fabric line is
so cute. Very vibrant, and modern. It should be adorable.
I was wondering what size the quilt is?
